# Bot plan or VPS: which hosting your Discord bot needs

You think you need a VPS, but a bot plan may already cover it and save you hours of administration. This guide separates the two paths by what each one really delivers.

Quick answer

For **Discord bot hosting on a VPS or a ready-made plan**, use the scope rule: if the bot is a single process, with no database of its own and no web dashboard, the ready-made plan covers it from R$ 4.49 per month and you administer no server at all. If the project already has a database, Lavalink, a queue worker or several bots, a VPS with root access from R$ 40.00 is cheaper and more flexible.

## What each one solves[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/discord-bots/discord-bot-hosting-vs-vps#o-que-cada-um-resolve)

From Discord's point of view, both products deliver the same thing: a process connected to the API, always up. The difference is who takes care of the layer underneath. On a bot plan, the environment comes already set up. You upload the code, point to the runtime, set the environment variables and the control panel handles the rest, including automatic restarts when the process crashes. There is no operating system to update and no firewall to configure.

On a VPS you get an empty virtual machine with root access. Everything on it is something you installed. That means total freedom and total responsibility at the same time. A VPS accepts anything that runs on Linux, so the same server can host the bot, the database, the community web dashboard, the music Lavalink node and even an internal API. A bot plan does not do that because it was designed to run one process, not to turn into a full infrastructure.

It is worth keeping this debate apart from the pure price debate. The guide on [how much it costs to host a Discord bot](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/discord-bots/discord-bot-hosting-cost) covers price ranges by bot profile. The question here is different: which hosting model fits your project and your time.

## Learning curve[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/discord-bots/discord-bot-hosting-vs-vps#curva-de-aprendizado)

This is the cost almost nobody counts. A bot plan asks you to know how to package the project, list the dependencies and use the control panel. That is practically the same knowledge you need to run the bot on your own machine. You can learn it in an afternoon.

A VPS demands a bigger set of skills before the bot is reliable in production. The minimum list is honest and short, but real:

* Connect over SSH and create a non-root user for day-to-day work
* Install the runtime in the right version, whether Node, Python, Java or Go
* Configure the firewall and close everything that does not need to be open
* Set up PM2 or systemd to restart the process and start it at boot
* Run system security updates with some regularity
* Have a backup routine for the code and the database

None of this is hard, and there is a guide for every step in the Guide Center. But it is recurring time. If the bot is a hobby and you have no wish to become a server administrator, the ready-made plan gives you the same result without that work. If you already administer other things or want to learn, the VPS stops being a cost and becomes a gain.

If you are leaving a free host that goes to sleep, you will find the full walkthrough in [migrating your bot from Replit to a VPS](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/discord-bots/migrate-discord-bot-from-replit-to-vps). The same steps work for moving toward the bot plan.

## When the R$ 4.49 plan is enough[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/discord-bots/discord-bot-hosting-vs-vps#quando-o-plano-basta)

The Basic plan has 512 MB of memory and 0.5 vCPU. That sounds small, and it is enough for a surprising number of bots. A moderation bot with ban, mute and channel cleanup commands rarely goes past 150 MB in real use. A ticket bot, a welcome bot, a reaction roles bot or a giveaway bot stay in the same range while the server has up to a few thousand members.

The plan is the right choice when all of these statements are true about your project:

* The bot is a single process and does not depend on another service you would have to host alongside it.
* The data fits in a local file or in an external managed database, with no need for a database server of your own.
* There is no audio streaming. Music is the feature that pushes a project up the resource scale the most.
* The bot is in few guilds and you are nowhere near the shard limit.
* You would rather spend your time writing commands than maintaining a server.

If the bot has grown and 512 MB got tight, the simplest path is not always a VPS. Moving up to Essential with 1 GB for R$ 8.99 or to Advanced with 2 GB and 1 vCPU for R$ 17.99 solves most cases without changing anything in your routine. The guide on [24/7 bot hosting](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/discord-bots/discord-bot-hosting-24-7) details how to keep the process stable in both models.

## When a VPS is worth it[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/discord-bots/discord-bot-hosting-vs-vps#quando-vale-a-vps)

A VPS stops being a luxury the moment the bot stops being a program and becomes a system. Five situations mark that turning point clearly.

**Several bots.** From three or four active bots on, adding up individual plans starts to cost more than a 4 GB VPS for R$ 66.00 that runs all of them side by side with room to spare.

**Your own database.** If the bot stores a virtual economy, levels, moderation history or orders, having PostgreSQL or MariaDB on the same host removes network latency and the cost of an external service. A small database with the bot alongside fits in 4 GB.

**Web dashboard.** Configuring through the browser requires an HTTP server with a domain and a certificate. That is VPS territory, not bot plan territory.

**Lavalink.** The audio node is a separate Java process that uses memory of its own and CPU during playback. Bot and Lavalink together need 6 GB for R$ 92.00 or 8 GB for R$ 118.00, depending on how many rooms play at the same time.

**Queue worker.** If the bot fires off heavy tasks such as image generation, reports or syncing with an external API, splitting that into a worker with Redis in between keeps the main process from freezing. That is three processes, and three processes call for a machine.

Do not buy a VPS ahead of need. A bot that uses 180 MB today does not start using 2 GB because you bought more. Measure real usage for a week before changing models, otherwise you pay for idle resources and take on administration work on top.

All prices are monthly. Quarterly, semiannual and annual cycles appear in the selector on the plan page, with the cycle total already calculated. Neither line has a first-month promotional price that goes up at renewal.

## How to decide today[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/discord-bots/discord-bot-hosting-vs-vps#como-decidir-hoje)

Answer three questions in order. First: does the bot need a service running alongside it, such as a database, Lavalink, a dashboard or a worker? If so, the answer is a VPS and the rest of the analysis is just picking the size. Second: do you have, or want to have, the routine of administering a Linux server? If not, stay on the plan and move up a tier when memory runs short. Third: how many bots do you maintain? From three on, add up the plans and compare with a 4 GB or 6 GB [Ryzen VPS](https://streethosting.com.br/en/vps/ryzen).

Neither choice is wrong or permanent here, because switching is cheap. The bot code is the same in both environments. If you start on the [bot plan](https://streethosting.com.br/en/bots) and find out in six months that you need a database of your own, you migrate in an afternoon. The reverse also works: if you bought a VPS and realized you only use 200 MB, you can go back to the plan and save money without losing anything. The expensive mistake is staying on a free host that goes to sleep while the community complains that the bot does not respond.

## Frequently asked questions

Do I need a VPS to host a Discord bot?

Not in most cases. A moderation, ticket or welcome bot runs fine on a ready-made 512 MB or 1 GB plan. A VPS starts to make sense when you need several services on the same server, your own database, a web dashboard or Lavalink.

What is the difference between a bot plan and a VPS in practice?

On a bot plan you upload the code and the environment is already set up, with a control panel and automatic restarts. On a VPS you get an empty machine with root access and build everything yourself: system, runtime, firewall, process manager and backups.

How much does each option cost?

Bot plans start at R$ 4.49 per month with 512 MB and go up to R$ 35.99 with 4 GB and 2 vCPU. The Ryzen 9 9950X VPS line starts at R$ 40.00 per month with 2 GB and 1 vCPU and goes up with the memory you pick.

Can I run several bots in the same place?

On a bot plan, each bot normally takes its own instance. On a VPS you run as many processes as the memory and CPU can handle, which usually works out cheaper from three or four active bots on.

Can I start on a plan and move to a VPS later?

Yes, and that is the most common route. The bot code barely changes. What changes is the environment around it, so the migration comes down to installing the runtime, recreating the environment variables and configuring the process manager.
