Quick answer

**Slash commands**(/) are Discord's official standard: they appear in the interface before you send, have autocomplete and do not need the Message Content Intent. **Prefix commands** (!command) work but require a privileged intent on large bots. For new bots, use slash commands.

## What each type of command is[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/discord-bots/discord-slash-commands-vs-prefix-commands#o-que-sao)

There are two main ways for a user to interact with a Discord bot through text:

* **Slash commands**: the user types / and Discord shows the list of available commands with autocomplete and parameter descriptions
* **Prefix commands**: the user types a prefix such as ! or . followed by the command name (for example !ban, .help)

Beyond those two, there are also interaction components (buttons, menus, modals) that are part of the slash command system but are even richer in functionality.

## Slash commands[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/discord-bots/discord-slash-commands-vs-prefix-commands#slash)

Slash commands have been the approach Discord recommends since 2021. Their main characteristics:

* They appear in the interface when you type / (much better UX for new users)
* They support defined parameter types (text, number, user, channel, etc.)
* Discord validates the parameters before sending them to the bot
* They do not need the privileged Message Content Intent
* They can be global (all servers) or limited to a specific server
* They support subcommands and subcommand groups

Global slash commands take up to 1 hour to propagate to every server. During development, register commands per server so updates show up immediately.

## Prefix commands[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/discord-bots/discord-slash-commands-vs-prefix-commands#prefix)

Prefix commands read the content of messages to identify commands. Their characteristics:

* Easier for beginners to implement
* They do not appear in the Discord interface (users have to know the commands)
* They require the Message Content Intent (for bots in more than 100 servers, it is a privileged intent that needs approval)
* Widely used in older bots built before Discord made slash commands popular

Since April 2022, bots in more than 100 servers need verification through the Discord Developer Portal to use the **Message Content Intent**. Without verification, the bot cannot read message content and prefix commands stop working.

## Practical comparison[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/discord-bots/discord-slash-commands-vs-prefix-commands#comparacao)

* **User experience**: slash wins with autocomplete and visible descriptions
* **Ease of implementation**: prefix is simpler for people just starting out
* **Discord support**: slash commands are the official future
* **Scalability**: slash does not need a privileged intent on large bots
* **Flexibility**: prefix can be more flexible for parsing free-form arguments

## When to use each one[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/discord-bots/discord-slash-commands-vs-prefix-commands#quando-usar)

Use **slash commands** when:

* The bot is going to join many servers
* You want the bot verified by Discord
* The commands have defined, structured parameters
* A good user experience is a priority

Use **prefix commands** when:

* The bot is for private use in a few servers
* You are learning bot development
* The bot has to process complex free-form text arguments

## Migrating to slash commands[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/discord-bots/discord-slash-commands-vs-prefix-commands#migrar)

If you have a bot with prefix commands and want to move to slash, the recommended strategy is to run both in parallel for a while:

* Register the new slash commands while keeping the prefix ones working
* Tell the server's users about the change
* Monitor which type of command users rely on more
* After a while, remove the prefix commands

## Frequently asked questions

Is Discord going to remove prefix commands?

Not officially. Discord has not announced the removal of prefix commands. However, since April 2022, bots in more than 100 servers need verification to access message content (the Message Content Intent), which breaks prefix commands when the intent is not enabled.

Can I have slash commands and prefix commands in the same bot?

Yes. Many bots keep both systems during the transition. You can register slash commands and also listen for the messageCreate event for prefix commands. It is a good strategy for a gradual migration.

Do slash commands show up before you send the message?

Yes, and that is one of the main advantages. When you type / in Discord, the available commands appear with their descriptions and the parameters they expect. Users do not need to remember commands.

How do I register a slash command on Discord?

Through the Discord API, using the application command registration endpoint. With discord.js, use client.application.commands.create() or the REST API with Routes.applicationCommands(). The command can be registered globally or per server.
