# Bandwidth vs traffic: what your server uses

Bandwidth is the width of the pipe, traffic is the water that flows through it each month. Mixing them up leads to bad plan choices. Here is how to estimate your server's usage with no guesswork.

Quick answer

**Bandwidth** is the speed of the connection, how much fits through per second. **Traffic** is the total transferred over the month. Bandwidth is the width of the pipe, traffic is the water that flowed through. Estimate usage from the number of players and their activity, and choose a plan with headroom to avoid slowdowns or overage charges.

## Bandwidth and traffic[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/infrastructure/bandwidth-vs-traffic#banda-vs-trafego)

Plenty of people mix the two up and pick the wrong plan. Bandwidth is about instantaneous speed: how much data fits through per second. Traffic is about accumulated volume: how much went through in a month. You can have a wide pipe and use very little water, or a narrow pipe that still fills the tank over time. Do not confuse this with ping, explained in [what latency and ping are](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/infrastructure/what-is-latency-and-ping).

## How to estimate usage[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/infrastructure/bandwidth-vs-traffic#como-estimar)

To estimate, think about how many users stay connected, for how long and doing what. Every connection exchanges data all the time. Multiplying that by your peak hours gives you a sense of monthly traffic, a central piece of sizing covered in [how much VPS you need](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/how-much-vps-do-i-need).

## Usage by project type[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/infrastructure/bandwidth-vs-traffic#por-tipo)

| Project | Traffic profile |
| ----------------- | --------------------------------- |
| Company website | Low, with spikes during campaigns |
| Game server | Steady for each connected player |
| Modpack downloads | High spikes with every release |
| Bot | Usually light |

## Avoiding surprises[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/infrastructure/bandwidth-vs-traffic#evitar-surpresas)

Monitor your traffic throughout the month. That way you can see the trend and adjust your plan before you hit the limit and get a nasty surprise on your bill or your speed.

## Choosing a plan[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/infrastructure/bandwidth-vs-traffic#escolher-plano)

* Enough bandwidth for peak usage
* Monthly traffic with headroom over your estimate
* Usage monitoring throughout the month
* Nearby data center for good ping

Weigh bandwidth, traffic and location together when you choose. ## Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between bandwidth and traffic?

Bandwidth is the speed of the connection, how much fits through per second. Traffic is the total transferred over time, usually measured per month. Bandwidth is the width of the pipe, traffic is the water that flowed through it.

Does a game server use a lot of traffic?

It depends on the number of players and their activity. Every connected player exchanges data continuously. On full servers running for long hours, the traffic adds up. Modpack downloads also weigh heavily on the total.

What happens if I go over my plan's traffic?

It varies by provider. Some slow your connection down, others charge for the excess. That is why it pays to estimate usage and choose a plan with some headroom, avoiding slowdowns or an unexpected charge at the end of the month.

Does more bandwidth improve ping?

No. Bandwidth is volume per second, ping is travel time. More bandwidth helps you move a lot of data at once, but it does not reduce delay. For ping, what matters is distance and routing.
