# Migrate providers with no downtime

Switching hosts is scary because you might lose data or go offline. With preparation, testing and DNS under your control, the cutover happens with minimal interruption for your users.

Quick answer

To **migrate with no downtime**, prepare the new server with the same stack, lower the **DNS TTL** in advance, sync the data and test the target by IP. Then point the domain at the new address and keep the old server up until you confirm all traffic has moved. A full backup before anything else is mandatory.

## The fear of migrating[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/infrastructure/migrate-server-without-downtime#o-medo-da-migracao)

What keeps many people stuck on a bad host is the fear of migrating: losing data or going offline. That fear goes away with a solid process. Preparation, testing and control of your DNS turn the cutover into a calm event. The foundation is having a [3-2-1 backup](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/infrastructure/3-2-1-backup-strategy) before you start.

## Prepare the target[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/infrastructure/migrate-server-without-downtime#preparar)

Build the new server with the same stack and configuration as the current one. Get everything ready to receive the data. Copy files securely using [SCP and rsync](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/transfer-files-to-vps-scp-rsync), which also allow a quick final sync at cutover time.

## Low TTL on DNS[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/infrastructure/migrate-server-without-downtime#ttl-baixo)

The TTL says how long an address stays cached across the internet. Lower the TTL on your records in advance, before the migration. That way, when you point the domain at the new IP, the change propagates quickly. Learn about the records in [pointing a domain to your VPS](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/point-domain-to-vps).

Lower the TTL at least a few hours before the cutover, preferably a day before, to make sure the old value has already cleared out of the caches.

## Switch over[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/infrastructure/migrate-server-without-downtime#virar-a-chave)

1. Run a final sync of the data.
2. Test the new server by connecting to its IP.
3. Update DNS to the new address.
4. Watch the propagation and the traffic arriving.

Do not shut down the old server right away. Some users may still have the address cached. Wait for the traffic to move over completely.

## Safety net[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/infrastructure/migrate-server-without-downtime#rede-de-seguranca)

* Full backup before you start
* New server tested by IP
* TTL lowered in advance
* Old server kept until the traffic has moved

With a solid process, migrating stops being a risk and becomes an improvement. For targets with high clock speeds and a low-latency network in Brazil, check out the [Ryzen VPS](https://streethosting.com.br/en/vps/ryzen) and the [dedicated servers](https://streethosting.com.br/en/dedicated).

## Frequently asked questions

Is it possible to migrate with no downtime at all?

The goal is minimal interruption, not absolute zero, depending on the service. With preparation, a final sync and well-planned DNS, most migrations go unnoticed by users.

Why lower the DNS TTL beforehand?

Because the TTL sets how long the address stays cached. A high TTL makes the change slow to propagate. Lowering the TTL in advance makes sure the new address is picked up quickly at cutover.

Can I shut down the old server right after migrating?

Not right away. Keep the old one up for a while, since some users may still be using the cached address. Only shut it down once you confirm all traffic has moved.

How do I avoid losing data during the migration?

Take a full backup before you start and run a final sync shortly before the cutover. Testing the new server by IP before pointing the domain also makes sure nothing essential was left behind.
