# Minecraft on a VPS or a dedicated machine: when the jump is worth it

For a single Minecraft server, performance comes down to the speed of each core, and a fast Ryzen VPS is usually enough. A dedicated server starts to pay off when your network grows to several servers and the combined memory and cores exceed the largest VPS plan.

Quick answer

When choosing between a **VPS or a dedicated server for Minecraft**, the practical rule is this: a single server depends on the speed of one core, and a Ryzen 9 9950X VPS uses the same processor as the Extreme dedicated servers for a fraction of the price. A dedicated server starts to pay off when you run a proxy network with several servers and the total goes past 64 GB of memory or 14 vCPU. If you do not want to administer Linux, Minecraft Pro solves the problem before either of the two.

## What changes between a VPS and a dedicated server[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/dedicated-server-vs-vps-for-minecraft#diferenca-real)

A VPS is a KVM virtual machine running inside a physical server that also serves other customers. You get reserved vCPU, memory, and disk, with root access, and the system behaves like a machine that is entirely yours. With a dedicated server, the whole physical machine is yours: all 16 cores and 32 threads of the processor, all the memory, 2 TB of NVMe, and a 10 Gbps port. What the dedicated server adds is exclusivity and size, not necessarily per-core speed.

To choose well, the right question is which resource is holding your server back. Minecraft simulates the world 20 times per second, and each cycle, the tick, has to finish within 50 milliseconds. The heart of that work, with entities, redstone, farms, and player actions, runs on a single main thread. Paper spreads chunk loading, networking, and a few tasks across other threads, but a single server will never use 16 cores. The full explanation is in [per-core performance versus core count](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/infrastructure/single-thread-vs-multi-thread-cpu).

Folia, a Paper fork, splits the world into regions processed in parallel and can use many cores. In exchange, most plugins do not work on it, and the gain only shows up with many players spread across the map. For the vast majority of servers, the math is still decided by the main thread.

## A single server: why the fast VPS wins[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/dedicated-server-vs-vps-for-minecraft#um-servidor)

Since the main thread is the limit, the comparison that matters is clock speed and architecture per core. Here is what each option delivers on that front:

* **Ryzen VPS:** Ryzen 9 9950X, Zen 5 architecture, up to 5.7 GHz, with DDR5 memory. It is the fastest processor per core in the lineup.
* **AMD Budget dedicated server:** Ryzen 9 5900XT, Zen 3, up to 4.8 GHz, with DDR4. It has 16 exclusive cores and plenty of memory, but each core is slower than the Ryzen VPS core. Moving a single laggy server from the Ryzen VPS to this dedicated server can make the tick worse.
* **AMD Extreme dedicated server:** the same 9950X with DDR5, with no neighbors. It removes any processor contention, but the per-core speed ceiling is the same as the VPS.

The number that sums up this whole conversation is MSPT, the average time the server takes to process each tick. Below 50 ms, the game runs at 20 TPS and nobody notices anything. Above that, ticks fall behind, and players see blocks snapping back, frozen mobs, and slow redstone. Paper's `/mspt` command and the spark report show this value.

In practice, if the server goes over 50 ms of MSPT on a Ryzen VPS, the fix is almost always in the server itself: pre-generate the map, reduce the simulation distance, limit entities and farms, and profile your plugins with spark. If the main thread is still saturated after that, the way out is to split the players across servers, and then you are already in the network scenario.

Memory follows the same logic. A well-configured Paper server rarely makes use of more than 12 to 16 GB, and memory beyond what the server uses does not speed anything up. A 16 GB VPS for R$ 222.00 or a 24 GB VPS for R$ 326.00 covers most single servers, including mid-sized modpacks, with headroom for the operating system.

## Proxy network: where the dedicated server comes in[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/dedicated-server-vs-vps-for-minecraft#rede)

In a Velocity network, each server behind the proxy has its own main thread. Now many cores do make a difference, because the lobby, the survival server, and the minigames run in parallel. How to set up a network is covered in [Velocity and BungeeCord in a server network](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/velocity-vs-bungeecord). A mid-sized network usually looks like this, in orders of magnitude:

* **Velocity proxy:** 512 MB to 1 GB, little processor.
* **Lobby:** 2 to 4 GB.
* **Main survival server:** 8 to 12 GB and the most contended core in the network.
* **Minigames:** 3 to 6 GB each, adding up with the number of modes.
* **Database and web map:** 2 to 4 GB together.

A network like this adds up to 25 to 35 GB and uses 8 to 12 vCPU, which still fits on a 32 GB Ryzen VPS for R$ 430.00 or a 40 GB one for R$ 534.00. The ceiling of the lineup is the 14 vCPU, 64 GB VPS for R$ 846.00. Beyond that, or when you want all the hardware isolated, the AMD Extreme SM dedicated server delivers 128 GB DDR5 and the 16 cores of the same 9950X for R$ 2,229.00, and the Extreme LG goes up to 192 GB for R$ 2,599.00.

There is also the middle ground of splitting the network across a few VPS, with the proxy and the lobby on one and the survival server on another. A failure stays contained, and each machine scales on its own. The cost is more systems to update and the connection between the proxy and the servers going over the network: set the Velocity forwarding secret and make the servers accept connections only from the proxy IP.

## Comparison with real prices[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/dedicated-server-vs-vps-for-minecraft#comparativo)

The values below are monthly, all in São Paulo and with Anti-DDoS included. The VPS plans shown are a few tiers of the Ryzen lineup, which runs from 1 to 14 vCPU.

| Option | Processor | Memory | Disk | Network | Monthly price |
| ------------------------ | ---------------------------- | ----------- | ----------- | ------- | ------------- |
| Ryzen VPS | 4 vCPU of the Ryzen 9 9950X | 8 GB DDR5 | 80 GB NVMe | 1 Gbps | R$ 118.00 |
| Ryzen VPS | 6 vCPU of the Ryzen 9 9950X | 16 GB DDR5 | 160 GB NVMe | 1 Gbps | R$ 222.00 |
| Ryzen VPS | 10 vCPU of the Ryzen 9 9950X | 32 GB DDR5 | 320 GB NVMe | 1 Gbps | R$ 430.00 |
| Ryzen VPS | 14 vCPU of the Ryzen 9 9950X | 64 GB DDR5 | 640 GB NVMe | 1 Gbps | R$ 846.00 |
| AMD Budget SM dedicated | Exclusive Ryzen 9 5900XT | 64 GB DDR4 | 2 TB NVMe | 10 Gbps | R$ 1,499.00 |
| AMD Extreme SM dedicated | Exclusive Ryzen 9 9950X | 128 GB DDR5 | 2 TB NVMe | 10 Gbps | R$ 2,229.00 |
| AMD Extreme LG dedicated | Exclusive Ryzen 9 9950X | 192 GB DDR5 | 2 TB NVMe | 10 Gbps | R$ 2,599.00 |

Three differences do not show up in the table. The VPS is ready within 60 seconds and scales through the control panel, charging only the prorated difference and requiring a restart. The dedicated server is delivered within 6 days, and changing size means migrating to another machine. And the VPS's 1 Gbps port is already more than enough for a Minecraft server, so the dedicated server's 10 Gbps is rarely the reason to switch.

The Budget dedicated server has a role of its own: lots of memory and lots of cores for a lower price than the Extreme, good for several light servers such as lobbies and minigames. For a heavy survival server that lives off the speed of one core, the 9950X is still the pick.

## When managed hosting is the better fit[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/dedicated-server-vs-vps-for-minecraft#gerenciado)

A VPS and a dedicated server both require Linux administration: updating the system, maintaining the firewall, scheduling backups, and bringing the server back up when it goes down. If the goal is to have a community server without that routine, managed hosting is usually the right answer, and the detailed comparison is in [VPS or managed hosting for Minecraft](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/vps-vs-managed-minecraft-hosting).

Compare them closely: the 16 GB DDR5 [Minecraft Pro](https://streethosting.com.br/en/minecraft-pro) plan costs R$ 176.00, with a 900% CPU limit, 120 GB of NVMe, and backups through the control panel. The 16 GB Ryzen VPS costs R$ 222.00, and part of that memory goes to the operating system. With managed hosting, the plan's memory belongs to the game server. Plugins, modpacks, and version changes also happen through the control panel, with no files to download by hand, and the plan page describes the migration done by the team, at no additional cost, for anyone coming from another host.

The Pro plans also let you split the resources across more than one server. The 32 GB plan, at R$ 352.00, allows up to 8 splits, enough for a proxy, a lobby, and a few game modes. Managed hosting stops being enough when you need to run other services on the same machine, such as a website and a bot, or want full control of the system, firewall, and software.

## Signs it is time to move up a tier[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/dedicated-server-vs-vps-for-minecraft#sinais)

* MSPT above 50 in spark even after optimizing the map, entities, and plugins
* High, frequent CPU steal in top on the VPS
* Combined memory of the servers close to the plan's ceiling
* A network that needs more than 14 vCPU or 64 GB
* Several VPS whose combined cost is already close to a dedicated server
* Tight disk space from large worlds, web maps, and local backups

The first sign almost always gets fixed with optimization, not new hardware. The second points to contention with neighbors, and how to measure and read it is covered in [what CPU steal is on a VPS](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/what-is-cpu-steal-vps). High, constant steal is one of the few cases where the same processor on a dedicated server improves the tick of a single server.

The other signs call for more resources. Inside the VPS, the upgrade is quick and done through the control panel. For a dedicated server, plan ahead: order early because of the setup time, copy everything while the current server is still online, and only switch the address after testing the new machine with your staff.

## Which one to choose[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/dedicated-server-vs-vps-for-minecraft#escolha)

| Scenario | Recommendation | Why |
| ---------------------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| A server for friends or a small SMP, no Linux experience | Minecraft Pro | Control panel, backups, and no system to maintain |
| A single Paper server with plugins | Ryzen VPS with 12 to 16 GB | Same processor as the Extreme dedicated server and headroom for the system |
| Heavy modpack or a server with a web map and database | Ryzen VPS with 24 to 32 GB | Memory for the game and for the services alongside it |
| Proxy network with 4 to 6 servers | Ryzen VPS with 32 to 64 GB | Each server uses its own core and everything still fits on one VPS |
| Network above 64 GB or 14 vCPU, or one that requires isolated hardware | AMD Extreme dedicated server | 16 exclusive 9950X cores and 128 to 192 GB DDR5 |

For most servers, the starting point is the [Ryzen VPS](https://streethosting.com.br/en/vps/ryzen), from R$ 40.00 to R$ 846.00, with root, NVMe, and activation within 60 seconds. The [VPS for Minecraft](https://streethosting.com.br/en/vps-minecraft) page shows the tiers most used for the game. When your network outgrows the VPS ceiling, the [dedicated servers](https://streethosting.com.br/en/dedicated) start at R$ 1,499.00, with 10 Gbps, 2 TB of NVMe, and Anti-DDoS in São Paulo.

## Frequently asked questions

Does a dedicated server make Minecraft faster than a VPS?

Only when the dedicated server's processor is as fast per core as the VPS's and the VPS was suffering from noisy neighbors. Minecraft's tick runs on a single main thread, so a dedicated server with an older processor can fall behind a VPS with a newer one. At StreetHosting, the Ryzen VPS and the Extreme dedicated server use the same Ryzen 9 9950X.

How many players justify a dedicated Minecraft server?

What justifies a dedicated server is not the number of players on one server, but how many servers you run at the same time. A single server hits the main thread limit before it uses a whole machine. A dedicated server makes sense when your network goes past 64 GB of memory or 14 vCPU, the ceiling of the Ryzen VPS plans.

Is one big VPS or several smaller VPS better for a Minecraft network?

One big VPS simplifies administration and lets the proxy and the servers talk to each other on the same machine. Several VPS isolate failures and let you scale each server separately. Both work; with several, set the Velocity forwarding secret and allow the servers to accept connections only from the proxy IP.

Can managed hosting handle a network with a proxy?

For small networks, yes. The Minecraft Pro plans let you split the resources across more than one server, and the 32 GB plan allows up to 8 splits, enough for a proxy, a lobby, and a few game modes without administering Linux. Larger networks, or ones with their own services alongside, are better off on a VPS or a dedicated server.

How long does it take to activate a dedicated server?

StreetHosting dedicated servers are delivered within 6 days, while a VPS is ready within 60 seconds after payment. That is why anyone planning to move from a VPS to a dedicated server should order ahead and keep the current server running until testing on the new machine is done.
