Quick answer

When you are torn between **Forge or Fabric on a Minecraft server**, and now NeoForge too, the modpack decides: use the loader that the mods you want are built for. Forge holds the big packs for 1.20.1 and older versions, NeoForge holds the big new packs from 1.21.1 onward, and Fabric is the leanest, strong on optimization and usually the first to reach a new version. The three are not compatible with each other, with a partial exception for Forge and NeoForge on 1.20.1.

## The difference in practice[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/forge-vs-fabric-minecraft-server#a-diferenca)

Forge, NeoForge and Fabric are mod loaders. They make Minecraft understand the extra files that change the game. What matters to you is that each mod is built for one of them. So the right question is not which one is better overall, but where the mods your community wants to play are.

The loader also has to be the same on both sides. If the server runs NeoForge with content mods, every player needs NeoForge and the same mods in their own Minecraft. Switching loaders later, once the community is already playing, means rebuilding everyone's modpack. For the infrastructure side, read [hosting a Forge and Fabric modpack](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/minecraft-modpack-hosting).

### How to find out which loader an existing server uses[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/forge-vs-fabric-minecraft-server#descobrir-loader)

Inherited a server or downloaded a server pack without knowing what it runs? The server folder itself gives the answer:

* **Forge:** recent versions have the folder `libraries/net/minecraftforge`, and the mod jars carry the file `META-INF/mods.toml`.
* **NeoForge:** the folder is `libraries/net/neoforged`, and in recent versions the mods carry `META-INF/neoforge.mods.toml`.
* **Fabric:** there is a hidden folder `.fabric` in the server root, and every mod carries a `fabric.mod.json`.

The first lines of the console at startup also show the loader name and version. Write both down before you touch any mod.

## What NeoForge is[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/forge-vs-fabric-minecraft-server#o-que-e-neoforge)

NeoForge is a fork of Forge created in July 2023. After disagreements over how the project was run, almost the entire team that maintained Forge left and carried on the work under a different name. The original Forge kept going with another team, and the two have been independent projects ever since.

At first, the only difference was the name. NeoForge for 1.20.1 launched practically identical to Forge for that version, and mods worked on both. From 1.20.2 on, NeoForge renamed the internals of the code and, in the following versions, rewrote important parts of the base, such as the communication between server and client. Since then, a mod built for one does not load on the other without its own version.

The practical result in 2026: many authors of large mods now publish first, or only, for NeoForge on recent versions, and new modpacks followed the same path. Forge keeps the largest historical catalog, especially on 1.20.1. The [Minecraft hosting with Forge and NeoForge](https://streethosting.com.br/en/minecraft-forge) runs both, and the choice is still up to your pack.

One tip when picking the version in the panel: NeoForge numbering follows Minecraft's. The 21.1 series is for Minecraft 1.21.1, 20.4 is for 1.20.4, and so on. Forge uses its own numbering, so check the downloads page to see which build matches your game version.

## When to use Forge[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/forge-vs-fabric-minecraft-server#quando-forge)

* The modpack you want is Forge, like many large adventure and technology packs for 1.20.1 and earlier versions.
* You need heavy content mods, with machines, dimensions and magic, that only have a Forge build on the version you picked.
* Your community already plays an established Forge version.
* The server will stay on an old version for a long time and you want the largest possible catalog for it.

Large Forge and NeoForge packs need more RAM. Before you settle on a plan, work out the usage in [how much RAM the modpack needs](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/how-much-ram-does-a-minecraft-modpack-need).

## When to use NeoForge[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/forge-vs-fabric-minecraft-server#quando-neoforge)

* The modpack is new and was made for 1.21.1 or a more recent version. Large packs of this generation, like All the Mods 10, run on NeoForge; the previous generation, like All the Mods 9, stayed on Forge 1.20.1.
* You want large content mods on a recent version. In that range, many of them only publish for NeoForge.
* You are starting a modded server from scratch, with no community tied to an old version, and you want a loader with frequent updates.

A quick test settles the question: open the page of the three or four most important mods on your list, filter by the version you want and see which loader shows up on all of them. If the answer is NeoForge, the decision is made.

## When to use Fabric[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/forge-vs-fabric-minecraft-server#quando-fabric)

* You want optimization mods that improve performance.
* The pack you want is Fabric or has an official Fabric version.
* You prefer a leaner base and fast version updates, with the server moving to the new version in the first few weeks.
* You want a server with only performance and admin mods, where players join with vanilla Minecraft and install nothing.

The step-by-step install, the Fabric API and the performance mods worth using are in [how to set up a Minecraft server with Fabric mods](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/minecraft-fabric-server).

## Side-by-side comparison[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/forge-vs-fabric-minecraft-server#comparacao)

| Criterion | Forge | NeoForge | Fabric |

| Time to reach a new version | Slower | Fast | Usually the fastest |
| Optimization mods | Available | Available | Very strong |
| Runs mods from the others | No | On 1.20.1, most Forge mods | No |
| Bukkit plugins | Only with a hybrid server | Only with a hybrid server | No |

On performance, the table misleads anyone who looks only at the loader. Fabric Loader is lighter, but a Fabric pack with two hundred mods weighs as much as a NeoForge pack of the same size. Optimization mods like FerriteCore and ModernFix also exist for Forge and NeoForge. What sets RAM usage and tick time is the mod list and how much the players explore, not the name of the loader.

### Day-to-day maintenance[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/forge-vs-fabric-minecraft-server#manutencao)

* **Forge on 1.20.1:** a mature version, with mods that have had years of fixes. Little changes from one week to the next, which makes maintenance predictable. The price is staying on a game version that gets no new features.
* **NeoForge on recent versions:** the loader and the mods get frequent updates. That brings quick fixes, but it calls for the habit of updating with a backup and reading the changelog before changing the loader version.
* **Fabric:** restarts fast and each mod is small, so swapping a jar takes minutes. In return, a Fabric list usually has more small mods, and each one updates at its own pace.

## Can you mix or migrate?[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/forge-vs-fabric-minecraft-server#misturar-e-migrar)

* **Forge and NeoForge on 1.20.1:** the only case where switching usually works, because the two codebases were still nearly identical. Even so, back up and start a copy of the world first.
* **Forge and NeoForge from 1.20.2 onward:** you cannot just swap the loader. Every mod needs a version for the new loader, and some mod on your list may not have one.
* **Fabric to Forge or NeoForge, and the other way around:** these are different ecosystems. A mod only survives the switch if it exists on both, and blocks and items from mods left behind disappear from the world.
* **Bridges between loaders:** Sinytra Connector lets you run some Fabric mods on NeoForge, but compatibility is partial and depends on each mod. On a server with a community, use it only after testing the whole list on a copy.

If what you want is mods and Bukkit plugins on the same server, hybrid servers exist for Forge and NeoForge, with known limitations. For Fabric, that path does not exist.

Before any loader or version change, make a full backup of the world and test on a copy. Mod content lost in the switch does not come back by restarting the server.

## How to decide and where to host[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/forge-vs-fabric-minecraft-server#como-decidir)

* List the essential mods for your project
* See which loader they exist for
* Check the Minecraft version supported by all of them
* Prefer the loader where the most important mod keeps getting updates
* Size the RAM to the size of the pack
* Agree with the community before switching loaders midway

Once you have picked the loader, install the pack by following [how to install a CurseForge modpack](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/install-curseforge-modpack-on-minecraft-server). For hosting, the [StreetHosting Minecraft hosting](https://streethosting.com.br/en/minecraft) runs in São Paulo, with mods and plugins allowed, starting at R$ 34.00 on the 4 GB plan of the Budget line. That tier works for Fabric with few mods. Medium packs need at least the 8 GB plan, which costs R$ 68.00 on Budget with DDR4 or R$ 88.00 on Pro with Ryzen and DDR5, with 500% CPU and 60 GB NVMe.

For large Forge and NeoForge packs, the [modpack hosting](https://streethosting.com.br/en/minecraft-modpack) has the 12 GB plan on Pro for R$ 132.00, with 700% CPU and 90 GB NVMe, and the 16 GB plan for R$ 176.00, with 900% CPU and 120 GB NVMe. If you want full control of Java and the operating system, a [Ryzen 9 9950X VPS](https://streethosting.com.br/en/vps/ryzen) with 6 vCPU and 16 GB DDR5 costs R$ 222.00, with 160 GB NVMe, root access and Anti-DDoS.

## Frequently asked questions

Can I use Forge mods on Fabric?

Not directly. The two use different mod formats, and a mod built for Forge does not run on Fabric, or the other way around, unless a separate version exists for each. Many popular mods publish both versions, so check the mod page before giving up on it.

Does NeoForge run mods made for Forge?

On 1.20.1, in most cases yes, because NeoForge started as a copy of that version of Forge. From 1.20.2 onward the two codebases split apart and every mod needs its own build for each loader. Check the mod page to see which loaders are listed for your Minecraft version.

Is Fabric always lighter than Forge and NeoForge?

Fabric Loader itself is leaner and has popular optimization mods, but what really weighs on the server is the set of mods in the modpack. A big pack is heavy on any of the three. Compare lists of similar size, not loaders in isolation.

Which one should I pick if I build the modpack myself?

List the essential mods and see which loader and version all of them exist for. If most are on Forge for 1.20.1, go with Forge; if you want 1.21.1 with large content mods, NeoForge usually has more options. If your focus is optimization, light mods and a new version, go with Fabric.

Will my world survive switching from Forge to Fabric?

Not always. Mods add their own blocks and items, and the content of a mod that does not exist on the new loader disappears from the world. Back up and test on a copy before migrating a world with real progress.
