Start on the map's correct version, join first and confirm it loaded before opening it to players. Generate a backup before anything else. It is what lets you go back to what you had if you do not like the new map. You will if you replace it without a backup. So generate a backup of the current world before swapping. With the backup saved, you can go back to what you had whenever you want, with no loss. How does the server know which folder to load? Through the world name setting in server.properties. The server loads the folder with that name. So you either rename the map folder or change the name in the setting. Does the map version need to match the server version? Ideally, yes. Opening a map on a very different version can corrupt it or break parts of it. Check which version the map was made for and run the server on that version. Where can I download maps safely?
