Quick answer

To set up a **Minecraft Fabric server**, install the Java version the game requires, download the server installer from fabricmc.net, accept the EULA and put your mods in the `mods` folder along with the Fabric API. Every mod has to match the server's Minecraft version. Content mods also go on the players' clients; performance mods like Lithium and FerriteCore stay on the server only.

## Before you start: version and Java[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/minecraft-fabric-server#antes-de-comecar)

The first decision is not the loader, it is the Minecraft version. On Fabric, the version is set by the most outdated mod on your list: if the server's main mod only has a build for 1.21.1, the whole server stays on 1.21.1. Build your mod list, check which version they all exist for and only then install. If you are still undecided about the loader, see [Fabric, Forge or NeoForge: which one to pick](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/forge-vs-fabric-minecraft-server).

Once the version is chosen, the Java comes with it. Each Minecraft version range requires a minimum Java, and the most common mistake when building a first Fabric server on a VPS is using whatever Java was already installed.

| Minecraft version | Required Java | Notes |
| ------------------ | ------------- | -------------------------------------------------------- |
| 1.16.5 and earlier | Java 8 | Old versions, few updated mods |
| 1.17 | Java 16 | Rarely used today |
| 1.18 to 1.20.4 | Java 17 | Includes 1.20.1, still widely used in modpacks |
| 1.20.5 to 1.21.x | Java 21 | The range with the largest catalog of recent Fabric mods |
| 26.1 onward | Java 25 | New year-based numbering, adopted in 2026 |

The numbering changed in 2026: after 1.21.x, versions started being named by year, such as 26.1. In the first weeks of a new version, many mods still have no build. A server with a long mod list usually stays one version behind for a while.

## Installing Fabric on the server[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/minecraft-fabric-server#instalar-fabric)

### On a VPS with Ubuntu 24.04[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/minecraft-fabric-server#em-vps)

The simplest route is the executable launcher from the official page [fabricmc.net/use/server](https://fabricmc.net/use/server/). You pick the Minecraft and loader versions, and the page generates the download command with the right numbers. The full flow looks like this:

`# Java 21 for 1.20.5 to 1.21.x (for 26.x, use openjdk-25-jre-headless) sudo apt update sudo apt install -y openjdk-21-jre-headless java -version mkdir -p ~/fabric && cd ~/fabric # copy the exact URL generated at fabricmc.net/use/server curl -OJ https://meta.fabricmc.net/v2/versions/loader/VERSAO_MC/VERSAO_LOADER/VERSAO_INSTALADOR/server/jar mv fabric-server-mc.*.jar fabric-server.jar # adjust -Xmx to the RAM you have available java -Xms2G -Xmx4G -jar fabric-server.jar nogui`

On the first run, the launcher downloads the official Minecraft server and the Fabric libraries, creates `eula.txt` and stops. Read the terms, change it to `eula=true` and run it again. On the second start you get the `mods`, `config` folders and the world. Open the port with `sudo ufw allow 25565/tcp`. A dedicated user, a systemd service with automatic restart and the firewall follow the same steps as the guide on [hosting Paper on a root VPS](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/host-paper-minecraft-server-on-vps), swapping only the jar name.

On memory: do not hand all of the VPS RAM to Java. The operating system, the disk cache and the Java process itself outside the heap also use memory. On an 8 GB VPS, somewhere between 5 and 6 GB in `-Xmx` is a reasonable start.

### On managed hosting[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/minecraft-fabric-server#hospedagem-gerenciada)

On [Minecraft hosting with Fabric](https://streethosting.com.br/en/minecraft-fabric), the loader is installed from the control panel, no commands needed. The rest of this guide applies the same way: mods go into the `mods` folder through the file manager or over SFTP, settings live in `config` and restarts are done from the control panel.

## Fabric API and dependencies[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/minecraft-fabric-server#fabric-api-e-dependencias)

The Fabric Loader is deliberately minimal: it only loads mods. The tools mods use to talk to the game live in a separate mod, the Fabric API. Almost every Fabric mod list depends on it, so treat the Fabric API as a permanent item in the `mods` folder, always on the same Minecraft version as the server.

Beyond it, some mods ask for libraries of their own, such as config libraries or cross-loader compatibility libraries. Each mod's page on Modrinth lists the required dependencies and, with the game version and loader filters, shows only the files that work for your server. Follow this order to build the folder:

1. Filter each mod by the server's exact version and by the Fabric loader.
2. Download the mod and every dependency marked as required.
3. Put the Fabric API in first and start the server with only that.
4. Add the other mods in small batches, restarting and reading the console after each batch.
5. Write down the name and version of each file. That list becomes the modpack your players will install.

Going batch by batch feels slow, but it is what saves you an entire afternoon hunting for which of the forty jars took the server down.

## Server mods and player mods[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/minecraft-fabric-server#servidor-ou-cliente)

Not every mod needs to be on both sides, and this is the part that confuses people coming from Paper the most. The mod's page on Modrinth shows which environment it runs in: client only, server only, or client and server.

* **Server only is enough:** performance and admin mods, such as Lithium, FerriteCore, C2ME, LuckPerms, spark and Chunky. Players join with vanilla Minecraft, nothing to install.
* **Both sides:** anything that adds a new block, item, mob, dimension or interface, and mods like Simple Voice Chat. If a player does not have the mod, they are refused on connect, and the message usually lists what is missing.
* **Client only:** graphics, minimap and interface mods, such as Sodium. On the server they do nothing. Keep them out of the server folder so they do not muddy the diagnosis.

This design opens up an option few people explore: a Fabric server with only performance and admin mods, where the community joins without installing anything. When there are content mods, hand out a ready-made modpack with the same versions as the server, instead of a list of links for each player to assemble on their own.

## Performance mods[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/minecraft-fabric-server#mods-de-desempenho)

These are the most cited optimization mods for Fabric servers. They are not a stack to install blindly: each one touches a different part, and it pays to know which problem you are solving.

| Mod | What it does | Watch out for |
| ----------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| Lithium | Optimizes physics, mob AI and other game logic routines, with the goal of not changing vanilla behavior | Safe as a first mod; does not require a client install |
| FerriteCore | Reduces the server's memory usage | Safe; mostly useful with large mod lists |
| C2ME | Parallelizes chunk generation, loading and saving using more cores | Back up the world first; may conflict with terrain generation mods |
| Krypton | Optimizes the server's networking | In development with no stability guarantee; test before using it in production |
| spark | Measures where the tick spends its time | Does not optimize anything on its own; shows where the problem is |

Start with Lithium and FerriteCore, which fix a lot with little risk. C2ME makes more of a difference on servers that generate lots of new terrain, such as freshly created worlds and servers with free exploration. Krypton helps on crowded servers, but the project itself warns that it is still in development and declares official compatibility with only a few mods.

Before installing C2ME on an existing world, take a full backup. The project explicitly recommends it, and mods that change terrain generation are the classic conflict case.

## Administration without Bukkit plugins[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/minecraft-fabric-server#sem-plugins-bukkit)

Fabric does not implement the Bukkit API. EssentialsX, Vault and PlaceholderAPI are not incompatible with the version: they simply have nowhere to plug in, and a jar dropped into `mods` is ignored with no clear error. For the most common admin functions, Fabric versions exist:

* **LuckPerms:** permissions and ranks, with its own Fabric build and the same commands as the plugin version.
* **WorldEdit:** world editing with the same commands as always.
* **spark and Chunky:** lag diagnosis and chunk pregeneration, both available for Fabric.

If your server depends on economy, shops and dozens of admin plugins, the path may be a different one. The guide on [how to install mods and plugins together](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/minecraft-mods-and-plugins-together) explains when combining the two worlds is worth it and when it is better to split them into separate servers.

## Common startup errors[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/minecraft-fabric-server#erros-comuns)

The Fabric Loader checks dependencies before opening the world. When something is missing, it stops and explains in the console, which makes most errors easy to fix.

| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
| -------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Console says a mod needs the Fabric API | Missing dependency | Download the Fabric API for the server's version and put it in mods |
| Console mentions an incompatible Minecraft version | Mod file built for another version | Download the file filtered by the server's exact version |
| UnsupportedClassVersionError right at startup | Java older than required | Install the Java from the table at the top and check with java version |
| Player refused on join, with a list of mods | Content mod missing on the client | Distribute the modpack with the same versions as the server |
| Server closes right after adding a mod | Conflict between mods | Remove the last batch you added and read the crash report |

When the server closes without a clear message, the file in `crash-reports` usually points to the guilty mod in the first few lines. The guide on [how to read the server crash report](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/read-minecraft-crash-report) shows where to look and how to isolate the mod by elimination.

* Same Minecraft version on server, mods and client
* Java matching that version installed and active
* Fabric API present in the mods folder
* Required dependencies of each mod downloaded
* No client-only mod in the server folder
* Backup taken before adding mods that touch the world

## Where to run your Fabric server[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/minecraft-fabric-server#onde-rodar)

Fabric with a few performance mods is light. What weighs it down is content mods, terrain generation and players spread across the map. RAM grows with the mod list, and the tick depends on a CPU with a high per-core clock. To estimate memory from the size of the list, use [how much RAM a modpack needs](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/how-much-ram-does-a-minecraft-modpack-need).

If you want full control over the Java version, the flags and the system, the [Ryzen 9 9950X VPS](https://streethosting.com.br/en/vps/ryzen) runs in São Paulo with DDR5, NVMe, clocks up to 5.7 GHz, root access, Anti-DDoS and activation within 60 seconds. The 4 vCPU, 8 GB plan at R$ 118.00, with 80 GB NVMe, is a good starting point for Fabric with performance mods and a few content mods. Large lists call for the 6 vCPU, 16 GB plan at R$ 222.00 with 160 GB NVMe.

If you would rather not manage Linux, the [Minecraft modpack hosting](https://streethosting.com.br/en/minecraft-modpack) installs Fabric from the control panel. The 8 GB plan costs R$ 68.00 on the Budget line with DDR4 and R$ 88.00 on the Pro line with Ryzen and DDR5, both with 500% CPU and 60 GB NVMe. For heavy lists, the 16 GB Pro plan costs R$ 176.00, with 900% CPU and 120 GB NVMe.

## Frequently asked questions

Is the Fabric API required on the server?

It is not part of the Fabric Loader, but almost every mod depends on it to work. In practice, install the Fabric API for the same Minecraft version alongside your mods. If no mod needs it, it just sits there without causing any problem.

Do players need to install mods to join a Fabric server?

It depends on the mods. Mods that add blocks, items, mobs or dimensions have to be on the client too, with the Fabric Loader and the same versions. If the server only runs performance and admin mods, such as Lithium, FerriteCore, LuckPerms and spark, players join with vanilla Minecraft.

Which Java version does a Fabric server need?

The same one the Minecraft version requires. Minecraft 1.18 to 1.20.4 needs Java 17, 1.20.5 to 1.21.x needs Java 21, and the new numbering, starting at 26.1, needs Java 25. With the wrong Java the server does not start and the console shows UnsupportedClassVersionError.

Can I use Bukkit plugins on a Fabric server?

No. Fabric does not implement the Bukkit API, so EssentialsX, Vault and PlaceholderAPI do not load. LuckPerms, WorldEdit, spark and Chunky publish their own Fabric builds, and most of the other functions exist as separate mods.

Which mods make a Fabric server lighter?

Lithium and FerriteCore are the safest starting point: they optimize game logic and memory usage without requiring anything from players. C2ME speeds up chunk generation but calls for a backup first. Install one at a time and measure with spark to find out what actually helped.
