With time locked on day, the monsters that spawn in the dark stop showing up on the surface. A gamerule applies to the entire server world, so it affects all players at the same time. It is not a per-player setting. Do I have to repeat the command every time I start the server? No. The gamerule is saved in the world. You apply it once and it keeps working on later boots, unless someone changes it again. I locked the day but it is still night, why? doDaylightCycle only freezes time where it is. Use the time set day command together with it to jump straight to daytime, and then lock the cycle. Can I turn off item loss on death? Yes, with keepInventory true. Players keep their items and experience when they die. Many casual servers turn this on to reduce frustration.
