Together they cut down on break-ins, griefing and unwanted commands. ## What a whitelist is[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/minecraft-whitelist-setup#o-que-e-whitelist) A whitelist is a list of approved players. With it turned on, only the accounts on the list can join the server. It helps a lot in the early stages and on servers with a closed community. * Ideal for testing before you open to the public. * Keeps unknown accounts out. * Makes access easier to control at private events. ## What ops are[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/minecraft-whitelist-setup#o-que-sao-ops) An op is a player with administrative powers. They can run advanced commands and change critical parts of the server. That is why op should be treated as sensitive access. Do not hand out op to a lot of people. The more operators you have, the greater the risk of mistakes or abuse. ## How to set it up safely[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/minecraft-whitelist-setup#como-configurar-com-seguranca) 1. Turn on the whitelist in the panel or in the configuration file. 2. Add only users you trust for the current phase. 3. Give op only to the staff members in charge. 4. Keep a record of who got op and when. 5. Review permissions at the start of every new season. * Have a backup before any permission change. * Set a clear policy for promoting or removing op. * Keep the staff list up to date. * Test logging in after each important change. Pair this process with a [backup and restore](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/minecraft-server-backup) routine to limit the damage from human error. No. It is also useful during testing phases, events and controlled maintenance. Is it safe to give op to friends? Only when there is trust and clear rules. An op has the power to change the whole server. Can I remove op later? Yes. You can take the permission away at any time from the panel or the console.
