# How to reduce lag on a Paper server

Lag is not 'the host's fault' until you measure it: high mspt comes from the world, the configuration and the code running in the tick. This guide puts diagnosis ahead of aggressive tuning.

Quick answer

To **reduce lag on a Paper server**, follow a scientific order: measure **MSPT** (milliseconds per tick), find the heavy consumers with **spark** or **timings**, cut useless entities and tasks, adjust `server.properties` and `paper-global.yml`with caution, and only then question the host's CPU. Tweaks made without measuring just add noise. With profiling data, every change becomes predictable and auditable.

## Understanding MSPT and TPS[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/reduce-lag-paper-server#entendendo-mspt-e-tps)

TPS (ticks per second) is the grade on the exam; **MSPT** is the scratch work behind it. The server tries to hold 20 TPS, which is 50 ms per tick. When the total work goes past that, the world clock starts to fall behind. Players notice it as delayed actions, combat desync, blocks that snap back and frozen NPCs. Watching only TPS in the panel hides micro spikes: use modern profiling commands and short graphs, not misleading five minute averages taken while the server is empty.

Tell _network lag_ (high ping, packet loss) apart from _server lag_ (high MSPT). The first improves with routing and a datacenter close to your audience, so go back to the guide [best Minecraft host in Brazil](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/best-minecraft-host-brazil). The second improves with code, world and tuning. Mixing the two up leads to a hardware upgrade that will not cure a plugin that leaks tasks.

Record a baseline at a dead hour, an average hour and a peak hour. Without those three samples you cannot tell whether the plan is undersized or whether one specific farm needs a cap.

## Diagnosing with spark and timings[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/reduce-lag-paper-server#diagnostico-com-spark)

### Spark (recommended)

Spark gives you a server side view of CPU, heap, GC and the frequent tick consumers, with less friction than classic timings. Generate a short profile during a noticeable TPS drop, not while the server is idle, or you will be photographing the wrong landscape. Export it and keep the history: comparing before and after each update helps you spot regressions quickly.

### Legacy timings

Still useful for teams that already have an old playbook. Learn to read the percentages per listener, not just the nice names. Combine it with **chunk metrics** when you suspect regions with kilometer long hopper lines, abusive spawners or too many armor stands decorating spawn for no reason. Yes, that takes down real servers.

1. Reproduce the lag with the smallest number of cooperative players.
2. Capture a 60 to 120 s profile at the peak of the problem.
3. Note which plugins changed version in the last 48 hours.
4. Cross-check against the Paper changelog. Regressions exist.

When the spark profile turns into a wall of class names, paste its link into [tickdoc](https://tickdoc.streethosting.com.br/?utm%5Fsource=streethosting&utm%5Fmedium=site&utm%5Fcampaign=tools&utm%5Fcontent=guia%3Acomo-reduzir-lag-servidor-paper) and read in plain language which plugin or task is eating the tick, with the fixes already ordered by impact.

## Safe config tweaks[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/reduce-lag-paper-server#ajustes-seguros-de-config)

Start with the high impact, low controversy levers: `view-distance` and `simulation-distance` (when available in your version chain), matched to what your host can really handle. Raising the distance without validating the impact usually pushes up the monthly bill with no real technical gain. Then adjust `paper-global.yml`: collision limits, smart despawn and mob spawning with limits that fit the gameplay you want. A hardcore economy needs viable farms; a casual adventure server can be more aggressive against useless entities.

| Lever | Typical effect | Watch out for |
| -------------------------- | ------------------ | ------------------------- |
| View / simulation distance | ↓ active chunks | Smaller visual experience |
| Mob caps / spawning | ↓ entities | Farms may need a redesign |
| Merge / hopper tweaks | ↓ tile entity load | Test technical farms |

Do not copy a giant "turbo performance" config blob from a forum without going through the diff line by line. Every server has its own mix; what saves one world wrecks another one's economy. Change control (git for your config files) spares you a rollback nightmare.

## World, plugins and entities[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/reduce-lag-paper-server#mundo-plugins-e-entidades)

Plugins are suspect number one when MSPT climbs after a specific update. Rotate them: turn off a non-critical feature, measure, turn half of them back on. It is an old binary search technique, but it works. Prefer actively maintained projects: one abandoned for two years may be silently lagging a new Paper version. For the world, chunk analysis tools show tiles per region, which helps on maps that have been alive since 1.12 with a legacy of entities.

* Limit projectiles and stray arrows in badly designed arenas.
* Armor stands in bulk and item frames in the spawn chunks are classics.
* Massive automation demands a design that respects limits, so educate your players.
* Turn off verbose debug logs in production. I/O hurts too.

Modpacks add an extra layer, so see [modpack hosting](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/minecraft-modpack-hosting). Lag coming from mods needs profiling specific to the Forge and Fabric ecosystem, beyond the classic Paper scope.

## When it is the hardware (for real)[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/reduce-lag-paper-server#quando-e-hardware)

Hardware comes into play when MSPT is still a problem on a nearly vanilla server, with modest distances and clean profiling, and the tick queue still grows with only a few players. Only then look at CPU isolation, a saturated NVMe disk or pathological garbage collection from RAM that is too tight. Move up to a plan on [Minecraft Pro](https://streethosting.com.br/en/minecraft-pro) or consider a [Ryzen VPS dedicated to the game](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/ryzen-vps-for-minecraft) if you need a heterogeneous architecture. If you want to compare CPU lines in the cloud, read [Ryzen VPS vs Xeon VPS](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/ryzen-vs-xeon-vps) before paying more for no single-thread clock gain.

* Does the profile show a clean tick in staging with the same map?
* No long disk queue in the host's monitors?
* Enough RAM to avoid stop-the-world GC every other minute?
* No systemic loss on the route to your players in Brazil?

Performance is a habit: short monthly config reviews, staff education about entities and a culture of not installing a plugin on a whim. A server with a review routine usually performs better than expensive infrastructure with no operating process.

## Frequently asked questions

Does lowering view-distance always help?

It almost always reduces chunk load and loaded entities, but it can frustrate players who like long views. Do it in small steps and post the change in your patch notes. Being open about it heads off rumors of a 'bad host'.

Can Paper break vanilla redstone?

Some patches change micro behaviors in extreme farms. Test on a copy of the world and read the release notes. In general Paper is widely adopted because the benefits outweigh the differences for 95% of servers.

How many plugins are 'too many'?

It is not an absolute number, it is the total time spent per tick in badly behaved listeners. Ten well built plugins beat thirty poorly written ones. Use a profiler and remove whatever gives players no real value.

My TPS only drops during events: is that normal?

Short spikes are expected with hundreds of players in the same area. The problem is a long plateau with no recovery. Size your CPU and RAM properly and limit simultaneous interactions in the minigame code.
