# WorldEdit setup without surprises: installation, basic commands and large edits

WorldEdit turns hours of building into seconds, and one wrong command wipes out a city just as fast. Here is how to install it, the commands that cover almost everything, who should have permission and how to run large operations without freezing the server.

Quick answer

To **set up WorldEdit**, install the Paper jar, or FastAsyncWorldEdit if you are going to work on huge areas, never both. Grab the wand with `//wand` and mark the two corners with left and right click. From there, `//set`, `//replace`, `//copy`, `//paste` and `//undo` handle almost everything. Give full permission only to people you trust, set a block limit and back up before any large operation.

## WorldEdit or FastAsyncWorldEdit[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/worldedit-minecraft-setup#worldedit-ou-fawe)

WorldEdit, maintained by EngineHub, has been the standard Minecraft world editor for over a decade. It exists for Paper and also as a mod for Fabric and NeoForge. FastAsyncWorldEdit, known as FAWE, is a fork focused on speed and memory: it uses the same commands, processes operations asynchronously and replaces WorldEdit entirely.

| Criterion | WorldEdit | FastAsyncWorldEdit |
| ------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Where it runs | Paper, Spigot, Fabric and NeoForge | Paper and servers based on it |
| Large operations | Applied on the main thread; very large ones freeze the server while they run | Split up and processed asynchronously, with less impact on the tick |
| Commands | Standard with // | The same, with extra features |
| Plugins that depend on it | WorldGuard and others | Keep working with FAWE in its place |
| When to choose | Survival server with occasional staff builds | Creative, large maps and events with huge pastes |

Never both together. If you already have WorldEdit and want to migrate to FAWE, remove the old jar before adding the new one. Plugins that depend on WorldEdit keep working, because FAWE exposes the same interface to them.

If you landed here because you want to protect the spawn, WorldEdit only comes in as a selection tool. The step by step for protection is in [setting up WorldGuard to protect regions](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/worldguard-minecraft-setup).

## Installation[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/worldedit-minecraft-setup#instalacao)

1. Make a backup before installing any tool that changes the world, following the guide on [Minecraft server backup and restore](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/minecraft-server-backup).
2. Download WorldEdit or FAWE from the official page, in the version compatible with your Paper build.
3. Stop the server from the control panel.
4. Upload the jar to the `plugins` folder through the file manager or over SFTP.
5. Start the server, read the console and run `/worldedit version` to confirm it loaded.

On first start, WorldEdit creates `plugins/WorldEdit/config.yml`. With FAWE, the configuration lives in `plugins/FastAsyncWorldEdit`. You will come back to these files in the limits section.

## Selecting areas with the wand[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/worldedit-minecraft-setup#selecao)

Every edit starts from a selection: an imaginary box between two corners. The `//wand` command hands you the wand, which by default is a wooden axe.

* **Left click:** marks the first corner of the selection.
* **Right click:** marks the second corner, on the opposite diagonal.
* **`//pos1` and `//pos2`:** mark the corners right where you are standing, useful for corners in the air or underwater.
* **`//size`:** shows how many blocks the selection contains. Always run it before a large edit, because this is where you notice you marked the wrong corner.
* **`//expand`:** grows the selection without marking it again. `//expand 10 up` stretches it ten blocks upward.

One detail that catches a lot of people: the wand is not a special item. For anyone with the permission, any wooden axe in hand marks a selection instead of breaking blocks. If that gets in the way of your staff in survival, change the item in `config.yml`, under `wand-item`, to something nobody uses day to day, and restart the server.

People who build a lot usually install the WorldEdit CUI mod in their own game, which draws the selection on screen. It helps avoid the classic corner marked ten blocks off to the side.

## Basic commands[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/worldedit-minecraft-setup#comandos-basicos)

With the selection made, these commands cover most of the work of building a spawn, a lobby and an event area.

| Command | What it does | Example |
| --------- | --------------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------- |
| //set | Fills the entire selection with one block | //set stone |
| //replace | Swaps one block for another inside the selection | //replace dirt grass\_block |
| //walls | Builds walls along the sides of the selection | //walls stone\_bricks |
| //copy | Copies the selection to the clipboard | //copy |
| //cut | Copies and deletes the selection | //cut |
| //paste | Pastes what was copied, relative to your position | //paste |
| //rotate | Rotates the copied content before pasting | //rotate 90 |
| //move | Moves the entire selection in one direction | //move 10 up |
| //stack | Repeats the selection side by side, great for walls and bridges | //stack 5 north |
| //undo | Undoes the last operation | //undo |
| //redo | Redoes what was undone | //redo |

The detail that confuses beginners is position in copy and paste. The `//copy` command stores where you were standing relative to the build, and `//paste` places the build in that same position relative to you. Always stand in the same corner when copying and when pasting, and the result comes out predictable. With `//paste -a`, the air in the copy is ignored and the surrounding terrain does not end up with holes.

Blocks use the internal Minecraft names, in English. You can mix several by percentage, which makes walls and floors look less artificial:

`//set 60%stone_bricks,30%cracked_stone_bricks,10%mossy_stone_bricks //replace grass_block 70%grass_block,30%coarse_dirt`

## Schematics[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/worldedit-minecraft-setup#schematics)

A schematic is a file containing a copied build. You save it once and paste it as many times as you want, in another world or even on another server. That is how staff keep templates for arenas, starter houses and event decorations.

`//copy //schem save arena_pvp //schem list //schem load arena_pvp //paste`

* **Where they live:** in `plugins/WorldEdit/schematics`, with the extension `.schem`. To use a schematic you downloaded or built in your test world, upload the file to that folder and load it by name.
* **Game version:** a schematic saved on a newer version can lose blocks or fail to load on an older server. Keep the version alongside the file name.
* **Test first:** paste third-party schematics in a test world first. Ready-made builds from the internet can bring signs, chests full of items and command blocks you did not want in the main world.

## Permissions[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/worldedit-minecraft-setup#permissoes)

WorldEdit is the most powerful tool on the server, for better and for worse. A `//set air` on a huge selection wipes out a city in one second. So instead of unlocking everything, build a builder rank with only what is needed.

| Permission | What it unlocks |
| ------------------------------------------------------ | -------------------------------------- |
| worldedit.wand | Receive the wand with //wand |
| worldedit.selection.pos | Mark the selection corners |
| worldedit.region.set | Use //set |
| worldedit.region.replace | Use //replace |
| worldedit.clipboard.copy and worldedit.clipboard.paste | Copy and paste |
| worldedit.history.undo | Undo your own operations |
| worldedit.schematic.save and worldedit.schematic.load | Save and load schematics |
| worldedit.limit.unrestricted | Go past the maximum block limit |
| worldedit.\* | Everything, for trusted administrators |

With [LuckPerms](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/luckperms-minecraft-setup), the builder rank looks like this:

`lp creategroup construtor lp group construtor permission set worldedit.wand true lp group construtor permission set worldedit.selection.pos true lp group construtor permission set worldedit.region.set true lp group construtor permission set worldedit.region.replace true lp group construtor permission set worldedit.clipboard.copy true lp group construtor permission set worldedit.clipboard.paste true lp group construtor permission set worldedit.history.undo true`

Never give `worldedit.*` to a new helper, and remove the permissions the same day someone leaves the staff. To find out who changed what after a mess, keep [CoreProtect](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/coreprotect-rollback-grief-minecraft) running, with WorldEdit edit logging enabled.

### When the command does not respond[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/worldedit-minecraft-setup#comando-nao-responde)

* **Unknown command for everyone:** the plugin did not load. Look in the console, right at startup, for an error line with WorldEdit in it. It is almost always a jar version that does not match the Paper version.
* **Works for operators but not for staff:** missing permission. Check with `lp user NICK permission check worldedit.region.set` which node is missing.
* **Asks for a selection you already made:** the selection is only valid in the world where it was marked. Someone going from the overworld to the Nether, for example, has to mark the corners again there.
* **Warns that the limit was reached:** the operation went past `max-blocks-changed`. Split the area into smaller parts or ask an administrator, instead of raising the ceiling for everyone.

## Limits and large operations[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/worldedit-minecraft-setup#grandes-operacoes)

In regular WorldEdit, the edit runs on the server's main thread. An operation with millions of blocks freezes the tick while it is applied, and players can get kicked for timing out. The default ships with no block limit, so it is worth setting a ceiling in `config.yml`:

`# plugins/WorldEdit/config.yml limits: max-blocks-changed: # limit for anyone who has not used //limit (-1 = no limit) default: 100000 # ceiling for anyone without worldedit.limit.unrestricted maximum: 500000 history: size: 15`

The numbers above are a starting point, not a rule. Adjust them to the size of your staff's builds. Each person can still lower their own limit with `//limit 50000`, which is a good safety net for beginners. In FAWE, limits live in the `config.yml` in the plugin folder, organized into groups you assign with the permission `fawe.limit.GROUP_NAME`.

The `//undo` command is no substitute for a backup: in regular WorldEdit it only keeps each player's most recent operations, in memory, and they are gone after a restart. Before any large edit, go through this list:

* Complete, recent backup of the world, with the restore already tested
* //size checked to know the real size of the selection
* Low-traffic time slot, with a heads-up on Discord
* Area with chunks already generated, so generation does not pile onto the edit
* Only one staff member editing that region at a time
* TPS checked after the operation

To avoid terrain generation in the middle of the edit, pre-generate the region first with [Chunky](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/pregenerate-chunks-minecraft-chunky). If the server gets slow after a large paste, the [spark profiler](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/spark-profiler-minecraft) shows whether the load ended up in entities, redstone or lighting.

## Where to host[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/minecraft/worldedit-minecraft-setup#onde-hospedar)

WorldEdit is heavy at two moments: memory, because the clipboard and history live in RAM, and CPU, when the edit is applied. A build or creative server, with several builders pasting structures at the same time, needs headroom on both.

On [Minecraft hosting at StreetHosting](https://streethosting.com.br/en/minecraft), in São Paulo, the Budget line with DDR4 starts at R$ 34.00 with 4 GB. On [Minecraft Pro](https://streethosting.com.br/en/minecraft-pro), with Ryzen and DDR5, the 8 GB plan costs R$ 88.00 with 500% CPU and 60 GB NVMe, and the 12 GB plan R$ 132.00 with 700% CPU and 90 GB NVMe, a comfortable range for a build server running FAWE. Plans include 1 to 3 backups in the control panel, depending on the tier, which turns the backup before each large operation into a one-click task.

## Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between WorldEdit and FastAsyncWorldEdit?

FastAsyncWorldEdit, or FAWE, is a fork of WorldEdit focused on speed and memory. It processes large operations asynchronously, with the same commands, and replaces WorldEdit. Never install both on the same server.

How do I get the WorldEdit wand?

Type //wand in chat. You receive a wooden axe: left click marks the first corner of the selection and right click marks the second. You need the worldedit.wand permission or operator status.

How do I undo a mistake in WorldEdit?

Use //undo right away. By default WorldEdit keeps the last 15 operations of each player, and //redo redoes what was undone. That history lives in memory and is lost on a restart, so a backup before any large operation is still mandatory.

How do I limit WorldEdit for staff?

Grant only the permissions each rank needs, such as wand, selection, set, replace, copy, paste and undo, and reserve worldedit.\* for trusted administrators. In WorldEdit's config.yml, also set a maximum number of blocks changed per operation.

Where are WorldEdit schematics stored?

In the schematics folder inside the WorldEdit folder, under plugins. The files use the .schem extension. To use a schematic downloaded from the internet, upload the file to that folder through the file manager and load it with //schem load.
