The official server is Windows only; on Linux it runs with Wine, without official support. For a small group, 8 GB of RAM on Linux or 10 GB on Windows is enough. ## Hardware requirements[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/host-enshrouded-server#requisitos) Enshrouded has a voxel world that players dig through, build in and reshape, and the server stores and simulates all of it. The result is a server that needs far more CPU and memory than its 16 slots suggest. The figure that circulates from the developer itself is about 6 GB of RAM for the process and a high-clock processor with several cores. Per-core clock matters more than core count, because the world simulation does not spread evenly across threads. On disk, the install is modest, but saves grow with the world and you will want local copies before every update; the 80 GB of NVMe on the entry plan is plenty. The server runs exactly the way Keen Games tests it, updates bring no compatibility surprises and you administer it through a remote desktop. The cost is the RAM that Windows consumes and the care the RDP port needs. Plenty of people use it, including through community-maintained Docker images with Proton, but a game update may require a newer Wine version, and the developer offers no support for this route. If your group plays every day and nobody wants to debug compatibility, stick with Windows. If you already administer Linux, the Wine route frees up memory for the game itself. The same dilemma shows up on the [V Rising server](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/host-v-rising-server), which also only exists for Windows, and the solutions are similar. ## Install on a Windows VPS[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/host-enshrouded-server#instalar-windows) Create the VPS with Windows from the control panel and connect over RDP, as in the guide on how to [create a Windows VPS and access it over RDP](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/create-windows-vps-rdp). Then: 1. Download SteamCMD for Windows from Valve's site and extract it to `C:\steamcmd`. 2. Download the server from PowerShell: `C:\steamcmd\steamcmd.exe +force_install_dir C:\EnshroudedServer +login anonymous +app_update 2278520 validate +quit` 3. Run `enshrouded_server.exe` once. It creates enshrouded\_server.json and the save and log folders. Close it with Ctrl+C in the console window. 4. Edit the JSON (next configuration section) and open the port in the Windows firewall. 5. Create a task in Task Scheduler with a system startup trigger, so it runs even with no user logged in, pointing to the executable and with the server folder as the start-in directory. `New-NetFirewallRule -DisplayName "Enshrouded" -Direction Inbound -Protocol UDP -LocalPort 15637 -Action Allow` RDP port 3389 starts receiving automated login attempts just a few hours after the VPS gets an IP. Use a long password, limit access to your IP when possible and do not leave the default user with a weak password. ## Install on Linux with Wine[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/host-enshrouded-server#instalar-linux) Use Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, which ships Wine 9 in its repositories. On 22.04 the system Wine is older and may not open the server; in that case, install a current version from the official WineHQ repository. SteamCMD has to be forced to download the Windows build, because by default it looks for the Linux one, which does not exist. `sudo add-apt-repository multiverse sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386 sudo apt update sudo apt install -y steamcmd lib32gcc-s1 wine wine64 xvfb sudo adduser --disabled-password --gecos "" enshrouded sudo -iu enshrouded /usr/games/steamcmd +@sSteamCmdForcePlatformType windows +force_install_dir /home/enshrouded/servidor +login anonymous +app_update 2278520 validate +quit` Do a first manual run to generate the configuration file: `cd /home/enshrouded/servidor export WINEDEBUG=-all xvfb-run -a wine enshrouded_server.exe` When the log shows the server is ready, stop it with Ctrl+C, adjust the JSON and create the service at `/etc/systemd/system/enshrouded.service`: `[Unit] Description=Servidor Enshrouded (Wine) After=network-online.target Wants=network-online.target [Service] User=enshrouded WorkingDirectory=/home/enshrouded/servidor Environment=WINEDEBUG=-all ExecStart=/usr/bin/xvfb-run -a /usr/bin/wine enshrouded_server.exe KillSignal=SIGINT TimeoutStopSec=90 Restart=on-failure RestartSec=20 [Install] WantedBy=multi-user.target` Enable it with `sudo systemctl daemon-reload && sudo systemctl enable --now enshrouded` and open the port with `sudo ufw allow 15637/udp`. The first time you stop it through systemd, check the log and confirm the world was saved; without that confirmation, stop the service only when the server is empty and after an automatic save. If the server closes right after opening, the number one suspect is the Wine version. Run `wine --version` and compare it with what the community reports for the current server version before touching anything else. ## Configure enshrouded\_server.json[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/host-enshrouded-server#configurar-json) The file sits in the server folder and is generated on the first run. A player joins with the password of the group you want to give them. * **slotCount:** simultaneous slots, up to 16. The `reservedSlots` make sure an admin can still join when the server is full. * **gameSettingsPreset:** picks a ready-made difficulty set. To adjust values one by one (hunger, enemy damage, day and night speed), use `Custom` and edit the gameSettings block; with any other preset, that block is ignored without warning. Names and permissions have changed between versions, so always start from the file your own install generated and check the [official server configuration documentation](https://enshrouded.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/16055441447709-Dedicated-Server-Configuration). Stop the server before editing, because it only reads the file at startup, and validate the JSON before bringing it back up: a stray comma is enough to keep the server from opening. ## Updates and backups[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/host-enshrouded-server#atualizacoes-backup) When the game updates, players on the new client cannot join a server running the old version, so updating the server is mandatory and usually urgent. Content updates can also change the save format, which makes the backup you took before them your only way back. * Warn the group and stop the server with everyone offline * Copy the savegame folder and enshrouded\_server.json off the VPS * Run the same SteamCMD command you used for the install * Compare the JSON with what the new version generated, if it added new fields * Start the server, join and check bases and chests before letting the group in An automatic daily backup is the minimum. On Linux, [Restic scheduled with cron](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/vps-backup-restic-cron) sends the savegame folder to external storage with retention; on Windows, a scheduled task with robocopy does the same job. Keep at least a week of versions: save corruption is sometimes only noticed days later, when someone goes back to an old base. Anyone who already runs a [Valheim server](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/host-valheim-server-brazil) will recognize the routine, except that there the server is native to Linux. ## Which VPS to choose[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/host-enshrouded-server#onde-rodar) Enshrouded depends on per-core clock and fast memory, which is the profile of the [Ryzen 9 9950X VPS](https://streethosting.com.br/en/vps/ryzen): up to 5.7 GHz, DDR5 and NVMe in São Paulo, with Anti-DDoS included and root access. For up to 4 players on Linux with Wine, start with the R$ 118.00 plan (4 vCPU, 8 GB, 80 GB NVMe); on the Windows route, the R$ 144.00 one (4 vCPU, 10 GB, 100 GB NVMe). To fill all 16 slots, the R$ 222.00 plan (6 vCPU, 16 GB, 160 GB NVMe) leaves room for large bases and for Windows, if that is your route. The limit is 16 simultaneous players, set in the slotCount field of enshrouded\_server.json. There is no official way to go past it, so a bigger server does not gain slots, only performance headroom. Does the Enshrouded server run on Linux? Not officially. Keen Games only ships the dedicated server (app 2278520 on SteamCMD) for Windows. On Linux it works with Wine or Proton, a route the community uses a lot, but the developer does not support it and it can break on updates. Which port do I open for the Enshrouded server? In current versions the queryPort is enough, which defaults to 15637 UDP. Older versions also used a separate game port, 15636, which was removed in a content update. If you changed the queryPort in the file, open the port you configured. How much RAM does an Enshrouded server need? Plan on 6 to 8 GB for the server process alone in a world with several players and large bases.
