Quick answer

To **host a Satisfactory server**, install SteamCMD on a Linux VPS, download the dedicated server (app 1690800), run FactoryServer.sh as a systemd service with SIGINT as the stop signal, and open ports 7777 TCP and UDP and 8888 TCP. Then claim the server through the in-game Server Manager. For up to 4 players, a Ryzen VPS with 8 GB of RAM and 4 vCPUs is enough; large factories need 12 to 16 GB.

## Requirements by stage and player count[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/host-satisfactory-server#requisitos)

In Satisfactory, server load tracks the size of the factory more than the number of players. Every belt, machine, train and drone is simulated on the server all the time, even in areas where nobody is. A fresh world runs light; the same world a hundred hours later, with plastic and fuel factories spread across the map, is a different machine.

| Scenario | RAM | vCPU | Disk | Note |
| ----------------------------------- | ----------- | ------ | ----- | ---------------------------------------- |
| 1 to 4 players, early game | 8 GB | 4 | 30 GB | Baseline from the official documentation |
| 4 to 8 players, mid-size factory | 12 GB | 4 to 5 | 40 GB | Headroom for trains and drones |
| 8 to 16 players or end-game factory | 16 GB | 6 | 60 GB | Official range for large saves |
| Megafactory, many players or mods | 20 to 24 GB | 7 to 8 | 80 GB | Monitor before going higher |

The official dedicated server page lists 8 GB as the baseline and 16 GB for large saves or more than 4 players. On the CPU side, the factory simulation depends on a few fast threads, so a high clock pays off more than many slow cores. The full explanation is in [single-thread vs multi-thread CPU in servers](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/infrastructure/single-thread-vs-multi-thread-cpu). Disk is the least contested resource: saves run from a few MB to a few dozen MB, but the game keeps several rotating copies and your backups will add as many again.

The signs that the server has become too small show up in the game before they show up on any graph: trains arriving late at stations, items stuttering along the belts, machines that seem to jump on the players' screens, and a delay before the world responds to a build. When that starts, check on the VPS whether RAM is brushing against the limit or one core sits at 100 percent the whole time. The guide on [monitoring VPS resources with htop and Netdata](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/monitor-vps-resources-htop-netdata) shows how to track both.

## Prepare the VPS and install[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/host-satisfactory-server#preparar-vps)

The Satisfactory server runs natively on Linux. The commands below apply to Ubuntu 24.04 and 22.04. Manage the VPS with a user that has sudo, as shown in the guide on [creating a sudo user on a Linux VPS](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/create-sudo-user-linux-vps), and run the game under a separate user with no administrator privileges.

`sudo useradd -m -s /bin/bash satisfactory sudo add-apt-repository multiverse sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386 sudo apt update sudo apt install steamcmd lib32gcc-s1`

Accept the Steam license when the installer asks. Then switch to the game user and download the server. The install directory goes before the login, otherwise SteamCMD ignores the destination:

`sudo -iu satisfactory /usr/games/steamcmd +force_install_dir /home/satisfactory/server +login anonymous +app_update 1690800 validate +quit`

Do a manual test before turning it into a service. When the log stops scrolling and the server is waiting for connections, press Ctrl+C, which shuts down with a save:

`cd /home/satisfactory/server ./FactoryServer.sh -log -unattended`

If the group plays on Steam's experimental branch, add `-beta experimental` after the app number in the SteamCMD command. Server and players need to be on the same branch and the same version.

## Claim the server and create the world[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/host-satisfactory-server#reivindicar)

Satisfactory has no config file for the admin name and password. A new server sits waiting to be claimed by the first player who connects to it through the Server Manager, so do that right after opening the ports, before someone else does.

1. In the game's main menu, open the Server Manager.
2. Add the server using the VPS IP and port 7777.
3. Accept the certificate it presents. The server uses its own certificate, and the warning on the first connection is expected.
4. Set the server name and the administrator password.
5. Create a new game by choosing the starting area, or upload a save you already have on your computer.
6. Under Server Settings, set a password for players if the server is just for your group.

Keep the administrator password in a password manager. Without it, you lose control of the Server Manager and can only recover the server by wiping its configuration on the VPS.

## Ports and firewall[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/host-satisfactory-server#portas)

Current versions use two ports. The old 15000 and 15777, mentioned in many tutorials, stopped being necessary in version 1.0.

| Port | Protocol | Purpose | Open it? |
| ---- | -------- | ---------------------------------- | ------------------------ |
| 7777 | UDP | Game traffic | Yes |
| 7777 | TCP | Server Manager API, over HTTPS | Yes |
| 8888 | TCP | Reliable game messaging, since 1.1 | Yes |
| 22 | TCP | SSH to manage the VPS | Yes, before enabling UFW |

`sudo ufw allow OpenSSH sudo ufw allow 7777 sudo ufw allow 8888/tcp sudo ufw enable`

Without a protocol, the 7777 rule opens TCP and UDP at once. If you change the ports with the Port and ReliablePort parameters, open the new ones instead of the defaults. To understand how the rules work and how not to lock yourself out of the VPS, see the guide on [the UFW firewall on an Ubuntu VPS](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/ufw-firewall-ubuntu-vps).

When the group can't get in, the cause is usually on this list:

* **TCP 7777 closed:**the Server Manager can't reach the API and shows the server as offline, even with the process running on the VPS.
* **8888 closed:** the server shows up normally, but joining the world fails or drops during loading.
* **Different branch:** a player on experimental with the server on the default branch, or the other way around, gets refused.
* **No session loaded:** a freshly claimed server with no game created or save loaded has no world to receive anyone.

## systemd service and updates[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/host-satisfactory-server#systemd)

The most important part of the service is the stop signal. The server saves when it receives SIGINT, the same signal as Ctrl+C, but systemd's default is SIGTERM, which shuts down without saving. Log out of the game user and create `/etc/systemd/system/satisfactory.service`:

`[Unit] Description=Servidor Satisfactory Wants=network-online.target After=network-online.target [Service] User=satisfactory Group=satisfactory WorkingDirectory=/home/satisfactory/server ExecStartPre=/usr/games/steamcmd +force_install_dir /home/satisfactory/server +login anonymous +app_update 1690800 validate +quit ExecStart=/home/satisfactory/server/FactoryServer.sh -log -unattended KillSignal=SIGINT TimeoutStopSec=120 Restart=on-failure RestartSec=15 [Install] WantedBy=multi-user.target`

`sudo systemctl daemon-reload sudo systemctl enable --now satisfactory journalctl -u satisfactory -f`

The ExecStartPre line is the pattern suggested in the official documentation: on every start, SteamCMD checks for a new version and downloads only the difference. That makes updating as simple as restarting with `sudo systemctl restart satisfactory`. If you would rather control exactly when the update happens, remove that line and run the SteamCMD command by hand with the service stopped.

With the update at startup, the first boot after a large patch takes longer. If systemd complains about a timeout, add `TimeoutStartSec=600` to the Service section.

## Players, saving and mods[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/host-satisfactory-server#configurar)

Almost everything is adjusted through the Server Manager, but the player limit lives in a file. The server settings are in `/home/satisfactory/server/FactoryGame/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/`. With the service stopped, open Game.ini and add:

`[/Script/Engine.GameSession] MaxPlayers=8`

Always edit with the server shut down: on exit it rewrites the files and can undo a change made while it was running.

* **Autosave:** the default is every 5 minutes. The interval can be changed through the Server Manager or with the console command FG.AutosaveInterval, in seconds.
* **Save on disconnect:** turn on the option to save when a player leaves. It protects progress when someone builds alone in the middle of the night.
* **Auto pause:** with the server empty, the simulation stops and the CPU rests. Disable it only if the group wants the factory producing while nobody is playing.
* **Mods:** the Satisfactory Mod Manager can install mods on remote dedicated servers. Players and server need exactly the same mods and versions.

## Automatic save backups[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/host-satisfactory-server#backup)

On Linux, saves live in `~/.config/Epic/FactoryGame/Saved/SaveGames/server` of the user running the game. Rotating autosaves help you go back a few minutes, but they do not protect against a corrupted save that overwrote the others, or against an admin mistake. As the satisfactory user, create the script `/home/satisfactory/backup.sh`:

`#!/bin/bash DESTINO=/home/satisfactory/backups ORIGEM=/home/satisfactory/.config/Epic/FactoryGame/Saved mkdir -p "$DESTINO" tar -czf "$DESTINO/satisfactory-$(date +%F-%H%M).tar.gz" -C "$ORIGEM" SaveGames find "$DESTINO" -name 'satisfactory-*.tar.gz' -mtime +10 -delete`

1. Permission: `chmod +x ~/backup.sh`
2. Scheduler: `crontab -e`
3. Every two hours: `0 */2 * * * /home/satisfactory/backup.sh`

Since saves are small, ten days of copies every two hours fit comfortably on any plan. To store them outside the VPS, use the guide on [automatic backups with restic and cron](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/vps-backup-restic-cron). To download a save to your computer and open it in single player, the guide on [transferring files with SCP and rsync](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/transfer-files-to-vps-scp-rsync) shows the command.

## Which VPS to choose for Satisfactory[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/host-satisfactory-server#qual-vps)

Satisfactory combines heavy simulation on a few threads with memory usage that grows with every stage. That is the profile of the [Ryzen 9 9950X VPS](https://streethosting.com.br/en/vps/ryzen), with up to 5.7 GHz, DDR5 memory and NVMe:

* **Early game, up to 4 players:** R$ 118.00 per month, with 4 vCPUs, 8 GB and 80 GB NVMe.
* **Mid-size factory, up to 8 players:** R$ 170.00, with 5 vCPUs, 12 GB and 120 GB NVMe.
* **End game or large group:** R$ 222.00, with 6 vCPUs, 16 GB and 160 GB NVMe.
* **Megafactory or mods:** R$ 274.00 with 7 vCPUs and 20 GB, or R$ 326.00 with 8 vCPUs and 24 GB.

A good path is to start at the 8 GB tier and move up when the factory grows: the upgrade is done from the control panel, charges only the prorated difference for the cycle and needs just a VM reboot, with nothing to reinstall. The VPS is in São Paulo, with Anti-DDoS included and activation within 60 seconds. The Xeon line gives you more vCPUs for the money, but the lower clock shows up exactly when the factory gets big. To compare with other games, see the [best VPS for gaming in Brazil](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/best-gaming-vps-brazil), and if the group also likes 2D automation, the [Factorio server](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/host-factorio-server) from our guide runs on the same VPS without competing much for resources.

## Frequently asked questions

How much RAM does a Satisfactory server need?

The official documentation lists 8 GB as the baseline and 16 GB for large saves or more than 4 players. In practice, end-game factories with trains, drones and thousands of machines sit comfortably between 12 and 16 GB, and megafactories or modded servers can need more.

Which ports does the Satisfactory server use?

Since update 1.1, the server uses port 7777 over TCP and UDP, for the game and the management API, and port 8888 over TCP, for reliable messaging. The old ports 15000 and 15777 are no longer used in current versions.

Can I move my single-player save to the server?

Yes. The in-game Server Manager has an option to upload a save to the server and load it. You can also copy the .sav file straight into the server's save folder while the server is stopped.

How do I raise the player limit on a Satisfactory server?

The default is 4 players. With the server stopped, edit Game.ini in the server's config folder and set MaxPlayers in the GameSession section to the number you want. More players means more RAM and CPU usage, so adjust the plan along with it.

Why did the server lose progress after a restart?

Usually because the process was terminated without saving. The server saves when it receives SIGINT, which is what the systemd service in this guide sends, and it also autosaves every 5 minutes by default. Stopping it with kill and the wrong signal loses everything since the last save.
