Quick answer

To **host a V Rising server** on a VPS, the official route is Windows Server: download app 1829350 through SteamCMD, copy the configuration files into the data folder, adjust ServerHostSettings.json and open UDP ports 9876 and 9877. On Linux the server runs under Wine, with no official support. For up to 10 players, 8 GB of RAM on Linux or 10 to 12 GB on Windows is enough.

## Hardware requirements[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/host-v-rising-server#requisitos)

Stunlock Studios does not publish minimum hardware specs for the dedicated server, so the numbers below come from how the process behaves in practice. The server simulates the whole world, including castles, servants, enemies and the day and night cycle, and usage climbs when players spread out across different regions of the map. What weighs most over time is the castles: every structure, chest and servant is state that sits in memory and goes into the save file.

| Scenario | Route | VPS RAM | vCPU | Suggested plan |
| ------------------------------- | --------------- | ----------- | ----------- | ------------------------------ |
| Group of up to 10 players | Linux with Wine | 8 GB | 4 vCPU | Ryzen 4 vCPU, 8 GB, R$ 118.00 |
| Group of up to 10 players | Windows VPS | 10 to 12 GB | 4 to 5 vCPU | Ryzen 4 vCPU, 10 GB, R$ 144.00 |
| Public server, 20 to 40 players | Linux with Wine | 12 to 16 GB | 5 to 6 vCPU | Ryzen 6 vCPU, 16 GB, R$ 222.00 |
| Public server, 20 to 40 players | Windows VPS | 16 GB | 6 vCPU | Ryzen 6 vCPU, 16 GB, R$ 222.00 |
| Two servers, PvP and PvE | Either one | 20 to 24 GB | 7 to 8 vCPU | Ryzen 8 vCPU, 24 GB, R$ 326.00 |

The difference between the routes is the operating system. Windows Server keeps a graphical interface and a queue of services loaded even with nobody connected, and that eats a few gigabytes before the game comes up. A lean Linux install uses a few hundred megabytes, and Wine adds little on top. On disk, reserve space for the install, for the automatic saves the server keeps and for local copies before each update; 80 GB of NVMe already leaves room to spare. The breakdown of how much Windows takes on its own is in [how much RAM, CPU and disk a Windows VPS needs](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/how-much-ram-does-a-windows-vps-need).

## Windows or Linux with Wine[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/host-v-rising-server#duas-rotas)

The official documentation is clear: right now there is only a Windows build of the server. That leaves two routes, and the choice depends on how much risk you accept in exchange for saving memory.

* **Windows VPS, the official route:** the server runs exactly the way the developer tests it. Updates arrive without surprises, errors show up in forums with known fixes and you manage it over Remote Desktop. The cost is the RAM Windows consumes and the need to protect the RDP port.
* **Linux with Wine, the unofficial route:** Wine translates Windows calls into Linux ones and lets the server run without a Windows license and with less memory in use. It works for plenty of people, including in community-maintained Docker images, but a game or Wine update can break the server without warning, and nobody at Stunlock will help you debug it.

At StreetHosting, the [Windows VPS](https://streethosting.com.br/en/vps-windows) is the same VPS with Windows Server 2019 or 2022 installed from the control panel, and the page explains how licensing works. If the community depends on the server every day and nobody on the team enjoys debugging Wine, stick with Windows. If you already administer Linux and want to squeeze the most out of the plan, the Wine route pays off.

## Install on a Windows VPS[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/host-v-rising-server#rota-windows)

Create the VPS with Windows from the control panel and connect over RDP, as shown in the guide to [create a Windows VPS with RDP access](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/create-windows-vps-rdp). Then:

1. Download SteamCMD for Windows from Valve's site and extract it to `C:\steamcmd`.
2. In PowerShell, download the server: `C:\steamcmd\steamcmd.exe +force_install_dir C:\VRisingServer +login anonymous +app_update 1829350 validate +quit`
3. In the server folder, copy start\_server\_example.bat to a new file, for example iniciar\_servidor.bat, and edit only the copy.
4. Create the folder `dados\Settings` and copy into it the two JSON files from `VRisingServer_Data\StreamingAssets\Settings`. The server loads the defaults from the original folder and then applies whatever it finds in your copy, which updates never touch.
5. Run the .bat once, confirm in the log that the server came up and close it with Ctrl+C, never with the X on the window, so the process shuts down cleanly.

The main line of your .bat should look something like this:

`VRisingServer.exe -persistentDataPath .\dados -serverName "Servidor V Rising BR" -saveName "mundo1" -logFile ".\logs\VRisingServer.log"`

To have the server come back up on its own after a VPS reboot, create a task in Task Scheduler with the system startup trigger, set to run whether or not a user is logged on, pointing to the .bat and with the server folder as the start-in directory.

RDP port 3389 starts getting scanned by bots a few hours after the VPS gets an IP. Before you announce the server, follow the guide to [protect RDP against attacks](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/secure-rdp-windows-vps).

## Install on Linux with Wine[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/host-v-rising-server#rota-linux)

This route uses Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, which ships a recent Wine version in its repositories. The trick is in SteamCMD: by default it downloads the Linux build of apps, and since that build does not exist, you have to force the Windows platform before downloading.

`sudo add-apt-repository multiverse sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386 sudo apt update sudo apt install -y steamcmd lib32gcc-s1 wine wine64 xvfb sudo adduser --disabled-password --gecos "" vrising sudo -iu vrising /usr/games/steamcmd +@sSteamCmdForcePlatformType windows +force_install_dir /home/vrising/servidor +login anonymous +app_update 1829350 validate +quit`

Copy the configuration files into the data folder, as on the Windows route, and do a first manual test. The variables stop Wine from trying to install components the server does not use and cut down the noise in the log; `xvfb-run` creates a virtual display, because some server components expect to find one.

`cd /home/vrising/servidor mkdir -p dados/Settings logs cp VRisingServer_Data/StreamingAssets/Settings/*.json dados/Settings/ export WINEDEBUG=-all WINEDLLOVERRIDES="mscoree,mshtml=" xvfb-run -a wine VRisingServer.exe -persistentDataPath ./dados -saveName mundo1 -logFile ./logs/VRisingServer.log`

With the test working, turn it into a service. Create `/etc/systemd/system/vrising.service`:

`[Unit] Description=Servidor V Rising (Wine) After=network-online.target Wants=network-online.target [Service] User=vrising WorkingDirectory=/home/vrising/servidor Environment=WINEDEBUG=-all Environment=WINEDLLOVERRIDES=mscoree,mshtml= ExecStart=/usr/bin/xvfb-run -a /usr/bin/wine VRisingServer.exe -persistentDataPath ./dados -saveName mundo1 -logFile ./logs/VRisingServer.log KillSignal=SIGINT TimeoutStopSec=90 Restart=on-failure RestartSec=20 [Install] WantedBy=multi-user.target`

Enable it with `sudo systemctl daemon-reload && sudo systemctl enable --now vrising` and follow the log in logs/VRisingServer.log. On the first stop, check that the log records the save; if it does not, shorten the autosave interval, which is your safety net on this route.

If the server does not come up, the first suspect is the Wine version. Ubuntu 22.04 ships an old Wine that may not handle current servers; in that case, use 24.04 or the official WineHQ repository. The same reasoning applies to [the Enshrouded server](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/host-enshrouded-server), which also only exists for Windows.

## Configure the server[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/host-v-rising-server#configurar)

There are two JSON files in `dados/Settings`. ServerHostSettings.json handles the technical side of the server:

`{ "Name": "Servidor V Rising BR", "Description": "PvE brasileiro, clã de até 4", "Port": 9876, "QueryPort": 9877, "MaxConnectedUsers": 20, "MaxConnectedAdmins": 4, "SaveName": "mundo1", "Password": "", "Secure": true, "ListOnSteam": true, "ListOnEOS": true, "AutoSaveCount": 25, "AutoSaveInterval": 300, "Rcon": { "Enabled": false, "Port": 25575, "Password": "" } }`

* **MaxConnectedUsers:** the file that ships with the server usually comes set to 40, and the technically supported maximum is 128. Setting it to the real size of your community avoids spikes the VPS cannot handle.
* **AutoSaveInterval and AutoSaveCount:** the interval between saves, in seconds, and how many automatic saves are kept. With 300 and 25, you have a little over two hours of history to roll back to.
* **Secure:** keeps the anti-cheat check on. Leave it at true on a public server.
* **Rcon:** remote administration over TCP. Only enable it with a strong password and with the port open only to your IP.

ServerGameSettings.json defines the world rules: game mode in `GameModeType` (PvP or PvE), clan size in `ClanSize`, castle raid windows, gathering multipliers and building limits. The names change between versions, so edit the file generated by your install instead of pasting an old template from the internet. To become an admin, put your SteamID64 in the `adminlist.txt` in the same folder (create the file if it does not exist), restart, enable the console in the game options and type `adminauth`. The full instructions are in the [official Stunlock repository](https://github.com/StunlockStudios/vrising-dedicated-server-instructions).

## Ports and firewall[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/host-v-rising-server#portas)

The default file uses 9876 UDP for the game and 9877 UDP for the query that feeds the server list. The official documentation uses 27015 and 27016 in its examples, which confuses a lot of people: what counts is what is in your ServerHostSettings.json. Without the query port open, the server works over direct connection but does not show up in the list.

| Port | Protocol | Use | Open it? |
| ----- | -------- | ------------------------- | ------------------------------------ |
| 9876 | UDP | Game traffic | Yes |
| 9877 | UDP | Server list query | Yes, to show up in the list |
| 25575 | TCP | RCON | Only to your IP, and only if enabled |
| 3389 | TCP | RDP, on the Windows route | Only to your IP when possible |

On Linux, use `sudo ufw allow 9876:9877/udp`. On Windows, open PowerShell as administrator:

`New-NetFirewallRule -DisplayName "V Rising" -Direction Inbound -Protocol UDP -LocalPort 9876,9877 -Action Allow`

## Backups and updates[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/host-v-rising-server#backup-atualizacao)

Automatic saves protect you from a mistake made today, but they live on the same disk as the server. A real backup is a copy outside the VPS. Copy the entire data folder, which includes Saves and Settings, during a quiet hour or right after an automatic save. On Linux, [Restic with cron](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/vps-backup-restic-cron) handles it with retention; on Windows, a scheduled task running robocopy to external storage does the same job.

* Warn the community and stop the server during a quiet hour
* Copy the entire data folder off the VPS
* Run the same SteamCMD command you used for the install
* Compare the Settings files against the new defaults of the version
* Bring the server up, log in with the team and check castles and inventories

Stunlock itself recommends backing up before applying a patch and before starting the server once it is updated. Big updates can change the save format or bring new settings, and on the Wine route they can also require a newer Wine version. Never update the game and switch Wine versions on the same day: if something breaks, you will not know which of the two changes is to blame.

## Which VPS to choose[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/host-v-rising-server#onde-rodar)

V Rising benefits from high per-core clocks and fast memory, which is the profile of the [Ryzen 9 9950X VPS](https://streethosting.com.br/en/vps/ryzen): up to 5.7 GHz, DDR5 and NVMe in São Paulo, with Anti-DDoS included. For a group of up to 10 players on Linux with Wine, the R$ 118.00 plan (4 vCPU, 8 GB, 80 GB NVMe) is the starting point. On the Windows route, step up to the R$ 144.00 plan (4 vCPU, 10 GB) or the R$ 170.00 plan (5 vCPU, 12 GB). A public server with 20 to 40 players does well on the R$ 222.00 plan, with 6 vCPU and 16 GB.

Activation happens within 60 seconds after payment, and if the server grows, the memory and vCPU upgrade is done from the control panel, charging only the prorated difference for the cycle, with one VM reboot. Both VPS lines, Ryzen and Xeon, are in the [VPS hub](https://streethosting.com.br/en/vps); for a survival game with lots of castles, Ryzen is the safer choice.

## Frequently asked questions

Does V Rising have a dedicated server for Linux?

Not officially. Stunlock Studios distributes the dedicated server (app 1829350 on SteamCMD) for Windows only. On Linux it runs under Wine, a route many people use, but with no support from the developer and liable to break on updates.

How much RAM does a V Rising server need?

For up to 10 players, a Linux VPS with 8 GB running the server through Wine is usually enough. On the Windows route, count on 10 to 12 GB, because Windows Server itself takes a few gigabytes. Public servers with 20 to 40 players call for 16 GB.

Which ports does the V Rising server use?

The ServerHostSettings.json that ships with the server uses 9876 UDP for the game and 9877 UDP for the server list query. The official documentation shows 27015 and 27016 as an example, so open whichever ports are in your file. RCON, if enabled, uses TCP 25575.

How do I become an admin on a V Rising server?

Put your SteamID64 in the adminlist.txt file, inside the Settings folder of the server data, and restart. In the game, enable the console in the options, open it with the console key and type adminauth.

Where are the V Rising server saves stored?

Inside the folder set by the persistentDataPath parameter, in the Saves subfolder. Without that parameter, Windows writes to the user profile, under AppData, LocalLow, Stunlock Studios. Always set persistentDataPath so you know exactly what to copy in the backup.
