# CS2 server RAM: per instance, per plugin and per match

A single CS2 server uses little memory. What sizes the VPS is how many instances run together, how much plugins and GOTV add to each one, and the disk space the install takes.

Quick answer

On **how much RAM a CS2 server needs**: each instance running a 5v5 with light plugins uses 1.5 to 3 GB. An 8 GB VPS with 4 vCPU runs one server with room to spare, 16 GB with 6 vCPU runs two or three, and 24 GB with 8 vCPU runs four or five alongside a database and a bot. In practice, the install size on disk and the CPU clock speed run out before the memory does.

## What one instance uses[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/how-much-ram-does-a-cs2-server-need#por-instancia)

The CS2 dedicated server is lean on memory compared to survival games or a FiveM city. It loads the map, the state of players and grenades, the match logic and whatever the plugins add. With an official map, ten players and a simple competitive setup, the process usually sits between 1.5 and 3 GB. That number varies with the map, the plugin framework and GOTV, all covered in the next sections.

The consequence is that the right question is almost never how much RAM CS2 needs, but how many instances you want to run at the same time. A retake server, a deathmatch server and a competitive server are three independent processes, each with its own memory usage and its own simulation thread. The VPS has to fit the sum, plus the system, plus whatever runs next to them, such as a database, a Discord bot and a ranking site.

## RAM and vCPU table[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/how-much-ram-does-a-cs2-server-need#tabela)

Reference ranges for instances of up to 10 players with admin plugins and GOTV on, or public servers of up to 32 players with light plugins. They are not a promise: measure your own setup after the first week.

| Scenario | Instances | RAM | vCPU | Ryzen 9950X VPS |
| ------------------------------------------- | ---------- | ------ | -------- | ---------------------- |
| One 5v5 for your group or practice | 1 | 8 GB | 4 | R$ 118.00 |
| Public server with plugins | 1 | 8 GB | 4 | R$ 118.00 |
| Hub with retake, DM and competitive | 2 to 3 | 16 GB | 6 | R$ 222.00 |
| Larger hub with database and bot | 4 to 5 | 24 GB | 8 | R$ 326.00 |
| League with simultaneous matches and a site | 6 to 8 | 32 GB | 10 | R$ 430.00 |
| Tournament with dozens of matches | 10 or more | 128 GB | 16 cores | Dedicated, R$ 2,229.00 |

In the first two rows the memory is more than enough, and that is on purpose. The 8 GB tier is the first one with 80 GB of NVMe, and the disk is what sets the minimum plan for CS2, as the disk section shows. From the third row on, the math becomes one vCPU per instance for the simulation and two spare for the system, the database and peaks.

A public server with 20 or 32 slots is heavier than a 5v5, but not in proportion to the slots. What grows is the work of the simulation thread, with more players shooting and moving at the same time, plus outbound bandwidth. Memory goes up a few hundred megabytes. If you plan a packed deathmatch server next to other instances, count it as one and a half instances when reserving vCPU.

## Plugins, maps and GOTV[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/how-much-ram-does-a-cs2-server-need#plugins-mapas)

Three things explain almost all of the difference between a 1.5 GB instance and a 4 GB one:

* **Plugin framework:** the most common combination is Metamod:Source with CounterStrikeSharp, which loads the .NET runtime inside the server process. That alone adds a few hundred megabytes per instance, before the first plugin. Each plugin adds its own share, and the ones that keep stats, rankings or skins in memory grow with the number of players who have passed through the server since the last restart.
* **Workshop maps:** custom maps tend to have more detail, more objects and bigger navigation data than the official ones. A well-built surf, bhop or jailbreak map can weigh a lot more than Dust II in memory and on disk.
* **GOTV:** the broadcast keeps in memory the frames for the delay set in `tv_delay`. A long delay, common in tournament matches to stop anyone from watching the broadcast and passing on information, costs more memory than a near-live broadcast. Recording a demo with `tv_record` hits the disk, not the RAM.

Changing maps reloads the map, but it does not reset the plugins' state. A plugin that accumulates data on every player who joins makes the instance's memory climb day after day, and on a public server that shows up after a week or two of uptime. A daily restart at an empty hour, scheduled with cron or systemd, fixes it while you track down which plugin is holding on to memory.

Bots use little memory, but every bot is CPU work on the simulation thread. A practice server with ten bots on a large map feels it more in the processor than in the RAM. Installing and configuring the plugins is covered in the guide on [hosting a CS2 server on a VPS](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/host-cs2-server-brazil).

## CPU matters more than RAM[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/how-much-ram-does-a-cs2-server-need#cpu)

Each CS2 instance concentrates the match simulation on one main thread. If that thread does not finish a tick's work in time, players feel inconsistent hit registration and jumpy movement, even with memory to spare. That is why the table raises vCPU together with instances and does not recommend packing many servers onto few cores.

What decides tick quality is the clock speed per core and how consistently that core is available. A Ryzen 9 9950X at up to 5.7 GHz gives more headroom per tick than a low-clock processor with many cores. More vCPU only helps when there are more instances to occupy those cores. The technical explanation is in [single-thread vs multi-thread CPU in servers](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/infrastructure/single-thread-vs-multi-thread-cpu).

## Disk: the limit nobody calculates[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/how-much-ram-does-a-cs2-server-need#disco)

The CS2 server is installed through SteamCMD with app 730, the same as the game, and the install takes between 35 and 60 GB depending on the version, tending to grow with every big update. Add the operating system, temporary space for SteamCMD to apply updates, Workshop maps and the recorded demos, which take from tens to hundreds of megabytes per match.

That is why the 40 and 60 GB tiers get tight, even with enough RAM for one instance. The 80 GB NVMe tier is the comfortable minimum. Several instances can share the same install, each with its own port and its own config file, which saves disk. The cost is that updating requires stopping all of them at once, because the files are the same. The impact of NVMe on map changes and loading is covered in [how NVMe affects game servers](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/infrastructure/nvme-game-server-performance).

Set up a routine that deletes demos older than 30 days or sends them somewhere else. An active league with several matches a night fills the disk in a few weeks.

## How to measure on your VPS[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/how-much-ram-does-a-cs2-server-need#medir)

With the instances running at peak hours, three commands show where the limit is:

1. Memory available on the system: `free -h`
2. Usage of each server process, in kilobytes: `ps -eo pid,comm,rss --sort=-rss | head`
3. Per-thread usage of one instance, to see whether the main thread hits 100%: `top -H -p PID_DO_CS2`

If available memory is comfortable and a thread sits near 100% during matches, the bottleneck is CPU: cut bots and heavy plugins on that instance, or spread the instances across more vCPU. If available memory drops close to zero, that is when it is time to move up a RAM tier. More quick diagnostic commands are in [checking CPU, RAM, disk and network on Linux](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/check-cpu-ram-disk-network-linux).

## Where to run it[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/how-much-ram-does-a-cs2-server-need#onde-rodar)

StreetHosting's ready-made CS2 plans are out of stock right now, so the way to get a server running today is the [Ryzen 9 9950X VPS](https://streethosting.com.br/en/vps/ryzen), with root access, DDR5, NVMe, up to 5.7 GHz and Anti-DDoS included, in São Paulo. A server for your group or a public one with plugins starts at the R$ 118.00 plan (4 vCPU, 8 GB, 80 GB NVMe). A hub with two or three instances fits the R$ 222.00 plan (6 vCPU, 16 GB, 160 GB NVMe), and a league with several matches, a database and a site goes to the R$ 430.00 plan (10 vCPU, 32 GB, 320 GB NVMe). Activation happens within 60 seconds after payment, and upgrading through the control panel charges only the prorated difference for the cycle.

For tournaments with dozens of simultaneous matches, the [dedicated server](https://streethosting.com.br/en/dedicated) Extreme SM, with a Ryzen 9 9950X and 128 GB of DDR5 for R$ 2,229.00, puts all 16 physical cores to work for your instances alone. The full comparison of the options is in [VPS or dedicated server for CS2](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/dedicated-server-vs-vps-for-cs2).

## Frequently asked questions

How much RAM does a CS2 server use?

A CS2 instance running a 5v5 with a few plugins usually sits between 1.5 and 3 GB. Large Workshop maps, plugin frameworks and GOTV with a long delay push it higher. Add the memory the VPS operating system itself uses.

How many CS2 servers fit on a 16 GB VPS?

Two to three servers with plugins and GOTV fit comfortably in 16 GB, as long as the VPS has enough vCPU. With 6 vCPU, each instance gets one core for the simulation, and there is processing left over for the system and the community bot.

Does more RAM improve CS2 server performance?

Not if there is already free memory. What decides tick stability is the clock speed of the core that runs each instance's simulation. RAM only becomes a problem when it runs out and the system starts using swap.

How much disk space does a CS2 server need?

The app 730 install takes between 35 and 60 GB depending on the version and grows with updates. Add Workshop maps and recorded demos. That is why a VPS with 80 GB of NVMe is the comfortable minimum, even though a single instance needs little memory.

Is the ready-made CS2 plan available?

Right now, StreetHosting's ready-made CS2 plans are out of stock. To get a server running today, the way to go is the Ryzen 9950X VPS with root access, starting at R$ 118.00 with 4 vCPU, 8 GB of RAM and 80 GB of NVMe.
