# How much VPS your project needs

A plan that is too small takes your service down, and one that is too big wastes money. Here is how to estimate CPU, RAM, disk and bandwidth by project type and scale up based on data.

Quick answer

To size a **VPS**, look at four resources: CPU, RAM, disk and bandwidth. Estimate by project type, start with moderate headroom and scale up based on real usage data. Light sites and bots need little. APIs, databases and game servers need more CPU and RAM. Monitoring is what keeps you from overpaying or underbuying.

## The four resources[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/how-much-vps-do-i-need#os-quatro-recursos)

Every VPS comes down to four resources. The CPU does the processing. RAM holds whatever is in use right now. Disk stores the data. Bandwidth is the network traffic. Each project weighs on these four differently, and the key is knowing which one your workload demands the most.

## By project type[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/how-much-vps-do-i-need#por-tipo-de-projeto)

| Project | Resource that weighs the most |
| ------------------------ | ----------------------------------- |
| Business website or blog | Moderate disk and bandwidth |
| Discord or Telegram bot | RAM depending on cache and features |
| API with a database | CPU and RAM with fast I/O |
| Game server | High clock speed per core and RAM |
| Heavy automation | Many cores and RAM |

A game server is a special case: clock speed per core matters more than the number of cores. Learn the difference in [Ryzen VPS vs Xeon VPS](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/ryzen-vs-xeon-vps).

## Starting right[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/how-much-vps-do-i-need#comecar-certo)

1. List the services that will run on the VPS.
2. Add up the estimated RAM usage plus a reserve buffer.
3. Pick the CPU type based on the workload profile.
4. Reserve disk space so the project has room to grow.

## Scaling with data[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/how-much-vps-do-i-need#crescer-com-dados)

* Active monitoring of CPU, RAM and disk
* Moderate headroom instead of overdoing it at the start
* A plan to scale up when the data calls for it
* Backups up to date before any migration

Track real consumption with [htop and Netdata](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/monitor-vps-resources-htop-netdata). The numbers tell you when to scale up, with no guesswork.

Once you know the size, you still need to pick the CPU type. ## Frequently asked questions

Does more RAM fix any slowness?

No. RAM helps when you run out of memory, but slowness also comes from a saturated CPU, a slow disk or bandwidth at its limit. Identify which resource is maxed out before you simply add memory.

How much disk should I reserve?

It depends on your project data and the growth you expect. Small sites use little, while databases and game servers grow fast. Leave headroom and monitor usage so you can expand before the disk fills up.

Is it better to start big so I don't have to migrate later?

Usually not. Starting with moderate headroom and scaling up based on real data saves money. Moving to a larger plan is usually simple, so it is not worth paying for idle resources.

How do I know when to upgrade my plan?

By monitoring. When CPU, RAM or disk stay close to the limit and it affects the experience, it is time to upgrade. Without monitoring, you only find out after the service has already gone down.
