That is almost never necessary. Open the client area and go to the VPS service page. 2. Check the status: if it is off, power it on and wait for Windows to start. 3. Copy the IP shown in the control panel and compare it with what you typed in the RDP client. 4. If the RDP port was changed, enter the IP with the port, in the format `IP:port`. A quick test: if the VPS answers ping but RDP won't open, the machine is up and the problem is the port or the service. If it doesn't even answer ping, go back and check the status and the IP. ## Network and firewall[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/rdp-not-connecting-to-windows-vps#rede-e-firewall) With the control panel's graphical console you can see the VPS screen even without RDP. That is where you fix the firewall and the service. * In the Windows firewall, confirm that the inbound remote desktop rule is enabled for the network profile in use. * In the system properties, check that the option to allow remote connections is ticked. * In Services, verify that the remote desktop service is running and set to start automatically. * If you changed the RDP port, confirm you created the firewall rule for the new port. Changing the RDP port without first creating the matching firewall rule cuts off access instantly. Always create the rule for the new port first, test it, and only then remove the old rule. ## Credentials errors[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/rdp-not-connecting-to-windows-vps#credenciais) The credentials did not work error is rarely a server problem. Keep in mind that many wrong attempts in a row can lock the account temporarily when a lockout policy is active. ## Stuck sessions[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/rdp-not-connecting-to-windows-vps#sessoes) Windows Server accepts a limited number of simultaneous remote sessions. If you always close the window instead of signing out, the sessions stay open on the server using up memory until the limit is reached. The classic symptom is connecting, seeing the screen for a few seconds and getting dropped. 1. Get in through the control panel's graphical console. 2. Open Task Manager and go to the Users tab. 3. Sign out the old sessions that aren't yours. 4. Watch memory usage: if it is at the limit, consider a larger plan. 5. If you prefer the quick route, restart the VPS from the control panel. Make a habit of leaving through the sign out menu instead of clicking the X on the window. Is that normal? For the first few minutes, yes. After installation Windows still finishes internal setup and restarts on its own. Wait a few minutes and test again before changing anything. What does the credentials did not work error mean? Most of the time it is a mistyped password, a keyboard in a different layout or the wrong username. Confirm the username is Administrator and paste the password into a notepad first to check the characters. The connection opens and drops after a few seconds. Why? It is usually a previous session stuck on the server or a lack of memory on the VPS. End the old sessions, restart the machine and watch RAM usage after you sign in. I lost RDP access completely.
