# How to choose your VPS billing cycle

The billing cycle selector shows up at checkout and almost everyone clicks it without thinking. The choice between monthly and annual changes your cost, your flexibility and how expensive a mistake is if the plan turns out too small.

Quick answer

An annual VPS plan is worth it when the project is already in production, resource usage is stable and you have confirmed that the configuration is enough. In that scenario the long cycle lowers the total cost and takes renewal off your list of worries. **If the project is still in testing or may change size in the coming months, monthly is the right choice**, because flexibility is worth more than savings while sizing is still uncertain. The price of each cycle appears in the selector on the plan page.

## How the billing cycle works in practice[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/vps-billing-cycle-monthly-quarterly-annual#como-funciona)

A billing cycle is the period covered by one invoice. You pay once and the server stays active for that interval. At the end of it, a new invoice is issued for the same amount. There are four options available: monthly, quarterly, semiannual and annual.

The mechanics are the same on every VPS line. What changes between cycles is the amount charged per period and how often you have to remember to pay. That amount is in the selector on the plan page, next to the configuration you picked, and it updates before you finish the order.

| Cycle | Billing frequency | Who benefits most |
| ---------- | ------------------------ | ----------------------------------------------------------- |
| Monthly | Twelve invoices per year | New project, in testing or with a size still undefined |
| Quarterly | Four invoices per year | Seasonal project with a season of about three months |
| Semiannual | Two invoices per year | Validated project that may still grow in the medium term |
| Annual | One invoice per year | Project in production, with stable usage and sizing settled |

For an order of magnitude: on Minecraft, the quarterly cycle has a 4% discount compared to monthly. That number is specific to Minecraft plans and does not apply to VPS. For VPS, check the price directly in the plan selector.

Two things do not change with the cycle, and it is worth making that clear up front. The first is the configuration you receive: an 8 GB VPS is exactly the same machine on monthly and on annual, with the same processor, the same number of vCPU and the same NVMe disk. The second is the payment method, because Pix, boleto and credit card work with any contracted period. The cycle is a purely financial decision about how long you commit, not a technical choice.

## When monthly is the right choice[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/vps-billing-cycle-monthly-quarterly-annual#quando-mensal)

Monthly is often treated as the option for people who did not think about it. It is the opposite: in several situations it is the most rational decision, because the cost of getting the plan size wrong is bigger than the savings from a long cycle.

* **A project in testing or just launched.** You do not know yet how much memory the application uses under real load. Paying month to month lets you move up or down a plan quickly, no discussion needed.
* **Short seasonality.** An event server, a launch campaign or a game season does not need twelve months. When the period is clearly short, monthly fits actual usage better.
* **A migration in progress.** If the VPS is the destination of a migration that has not happened yet, stay on monthly until the cutover is done and the load has settled.
* **Tight cash flow.**The decision is not always technical. Spreading the cost over twelve payments is legitimate and avoids straining the month's cash.
* **You are evaluating the provider.** No guide replaces running your own workload for a few weeks. Do that on monthly before committing to a year.

There is a hidden cost to monthly that almost nobody counts: attention. Twelve invoices a year mean twelve moments when someone has to remember to pay, and a single lapse is enough for the service to be suspended. If you will stay on monthly for a long time, keep a card saved so the charge happens on its own. That way you keep the flexibility of the short cycle without carrying its operational risk.

## When a long cycle pays off[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/vps-billing-cycle-monthly-quarterly-annual#quando-ciclo-longo)

A long cycle is not only about price. It has two practical effects that matter in a production environment: fewer financial operations per year and less risk of suspension from a forgotten invoice. An annual invoice is one chance to forget per year, against twelve on monthly.

* **The application is already in production and stable.** No unexpected memory spikes, no rewrite planned, no stack change on the horizon.
* **You have watched usage for a few months.** With a usage graph in hand, sizing stops being a guess and the long commitment becomes safe.
* **The project has recurring revenue.** An online store, a SaaS and a subscription service are predictable enough to justify an annual contract.
* **There is a purchasing process.**In a company, every invoice approval costs people time. One invoice a year simplifies the finance team's work.
* **You want to lock in cost predictability.** Fixing the price for a long period protects your budget from adjustments during the contracted cycle.

## The risk of locking in a long cycle on an undersized plan[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/vps-billing-cycle-monthly-quarterly-annual#risco-do-ciclo-longo)

This is the mistake that costs the most. Someone picks the smaller plan to lower the price, sees that the annual cycle lowers it even further and commits to a year on a configuration that cannot support the project. Within a few weeks swap is always full, the application slows down and the only way out is to spend again.

A long cycle amplifies the quality of your sizing decision. If the sizing is right, the long cycle multiplies the benefit. If it is wrong, it multiplies the annoyance. Size first, choose the cycle after.

The order that works is simple. Start with the resource calculation in [how much VPS I need for my project](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/how-much-vps-do-i-need). Then pick the line and the provider with the checklist in [how to choose a VPS in Brazil](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/how-to-choose-a-vps-in-brazil). Only then open the cycle selector. Whoever does it in reverse ends up letting the price decide the architecture.

Keep in mind too that a paid cycle is not refunded if you give up. The service stays active until the end of the contracted period and does not renew after that. So if there is any real chance the project gets shut down halfway through, monthly is the honest option.

## How a mid-cycle upgrade works[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/vps-billing-cycle-monthly-quarterly-annual#upgrade-no-meio)

The good news is that committing to a long cycle does not trap you in one configuration. The upgrade is done in the panel and the calculation is prorated: the system looks at how much of the current cycle is left, deducts that credit and charges only the difference up to the new plan.

* **You do not lose what you already paid.** The remaining balance of the old plan counts as credit in the upgrade calculation.
* **The renewal date does not change.** The cycle keeps the same due date, now on the larger plan.
* **Resizing involves a restart.** Changing memory, vCPU and disk requires the virtual machine to restart, so schedule it for a low traffic window.
* **Downgrading is trickier.** Shrinking the disk is not always possible without a reinstall, because the file system has to fit the new size. That is why scaling up is always simpler than scaling down.

In practice, that means the risk of going too big is small and the risk of going too small is larger. When you are torn between two sizes and the cycle is long, go with the bigger one.

## How to decide in five minutes[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/vps-billing-cycle-monthly-quarterly-annual#decisao-final)

Answer three questions before you click the selector. They settle most cases without a spreadsheet.

* **Has the project been running under real load for at least two months?** If not, choose monthly and come back to this decision later.
* **Can you state how much memory you need?** If the answer is a guess, it is too early for a long cycle.
* **Is there a concrete chance of shutting the project down within six months?** If there is, stay on monthly or quarterly.

Three answers in favor of the long cycle and the decision is annual. One negative answer and monthly is still the cheapest choice in the end, because it avoids paying for a year of server you will not use. The price for each period is in the selector on the [VPS page](https://streethosting.com.br/en/vps) and on the [Ryzen line](https://streethosting.com.br/en/vps/ryzen).

If you are still moving off shared hosting and are not even sure you need a VPS, the comparison in [VPS or shared hosting](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/vps-vs-shared-hosting) settles that step before the conversation about billing cycles.

## Frequently asked questions

Is an annual VPS plan worth it?

It is when the project is already in production, with stable usage and sizing validated over at least a few months. In that scenario the long cycle lowers the total cost and removes the monthly renewal. For a project that is still in testing or has an undefined size, monthly protects you better.

What is the price difference between VPS billing cycles?

The price of each cycle appears in the selector on the plan page, along with the total charged per period. Just switch between monthly, quarterly, semiannual and annual to see the matching price before you finish the order.

Can I upgrade my VPS in the middle of an annual plan?

Yes. The upgrade is done in the panel and the system calculates the amount prorated to the time left in the cycle, charging only the difference. You do not lose what you already paid and you do not have to wait for the cycle to end.

Can I switch from monthly to annual after signing up?

Yes. The cycle change takes effect at the next renewal, by choosing the new period on the invoice or by asking support to make the change. You do not need to cancel the service or migrate the server.

What happens if I cancel before an annual cycle ends?

The service stays active until the end of the period you already paid for and is not renewed after that. That is why a long cycle suits projects with a defined horizon, and monthly suits anyone who may still change their mind.
