Quick answer

When you are torn between a **VPS in Brazil or the United States**, follow your users. For a Brazilian audience, a VPS in São Paulo responds in a few dozen milliseconds for most of the country, while a server in the US sits, from the Southeast, above 100 ms round trip to Miami or New York and around 150 ms or more to the West Coast. The US makes sense when your audience is in North or Central America, or when your application talks constantly to services hosted there.

## The rule that settles most cases[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/vps-brazil-vs-usa#regra-geral)

Put the server close to the people who use it. Every request, every click and every player movement makes a round trip to the server, and distance sets a minimum time for that trip that no processor, disk or network card can remove. A fast server far from the user loses to an ordinary server close to them whenever the application is interactive. The full concept is covered in [what latency and ping are](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/infrastructure/what-is-latency-and-ping).

That is why the choice does not start with price or with the country that has the best datacenter. It starts with three questions, answered in order:

* Where do most of the visits or connections come from?
* Is the application interactive, meaning someone is waiting for the response?
* Is there a contractual or legal requirement about where the data lives?

If most of your users are Brazilian and the application is interactive, the answer is Brazil. This guide focuses on VPS and the direct comparison with the United States. For the dedicated server view and other destinations, such as Europe, see [dedicated server in Brazil or abroad](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/infrastructure/dedicated-server-brazil-vs-overseas).

## Latency: the ranges to expect[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/vps-brazil-vs-usa#latencia)

The values below are approximate round-trip ranges from ordinary connections. They vary with the ISP, the route the traffic takes and the time of day, so use them as guidance, not as a guarantee.

| Where the user is | Server in São Paulo | Server in Miami or New York | Server in Los Angeles |
| ----------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------ | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------- |
| Southeast and South of Brazil | A few dozen ms, often under 30 | Over 100 ms | Around 150 ms or more |
| Other regions of Brazil | A few dozen ms, depending on the ISP | Varies a lot; in the Northeast, where submarine cables land, it can be under 100 ms | Around 150 ms or more |
| Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Paraguay | A few dozen ms | Over 100 ms | Around 150 ms or more |
| Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean | Over 100 ms | A few dozen ms in Miami | Usually lower than to São Paulo |
| United States and Canada | Over 100 ms | Low on the East Coast | Low on the West Coast |

Miami looks good for Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean because it is one of the main landing points for submarine cables and a major traffic exchange point for the region, and many routes pass through it. For Brazil, however, Miami is still thousands of kilometers away, and crossing the United States to the West Coast adds a few dozen more milliseconds.

Before deciding, measure from your users' side. Ask a few of them to run the commands below against a test IP in each region, or follow the step-by-step in [how to test VPS latency](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/test-vps-latency).

`ping -c 20 IP_DO_SERVIDOR mtr -rwc 50 IP_DO_SERVIDOR`

Latency multiplies. A page that makes ten requests in sequence pays the difference between regions ten times. With 100 ms extra per round trip, that is about one extra second of waiting, something the user notices without any tool.

## Where your users are[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/vps-brazil-vs-usa#seus-usuarios)

Plenty of people pick a region by gut feeling and later find out their audience was not where they imagined. The data is usually within reach:

* **Website or online store:** the countries and states report in your analytics tool, or your web server logs cross-checked with IP geolocation.
* **Game server:** the origin of the IPs that connect. A community organized on a Brazilian Discord almost always means players in Brazil.
* **API for other companies:** where the servers of the clients that call your API are, not their end users.
* **Application that consumes other APIs:** where the services you call on every request live, such as a payment gateway, an AI service or a CRM. If your backend makes several calls in sequence to a service in the US, each one pays for the international trip.

Also separate the type of traffic. Games, voice, admin panels and checkout are interactive and feel every millisecond. Batch processing, backups, report generation and data collection run with nobody waiting and tolerate distance.

## Use cases: when each region wins[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/vps-brazil-vs-usa#casos-de-uso)

| Scenario | Best region | Why |
| --------------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Game server for Brazilian players | Brazil | Every action makes the round trip; 100 ms extra shows up in the game |
| Online store, SaaS or customer dashboard in Brazil | Brazil | A dynamic page accumulates latency on every request in sequence |
| Integration with Pix, banks and domestic services | Brazil | The backend sits close to the APIs it calls |
| Audience mostly in North America | United States | Low latency for the people who actually use it |
| Audience in Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean | United States, preferably Miami | Many routes in the region pass through it |
| Worker that calls US-hosted APIs thousands of times in sequence | United States | Each call saves the international trip |
| Off-site backup copy outside the country | United States as a secondary destination | Protects against a regional failure; users never access this machine |
| Audience spread across the Americas | Brazil with a CDN, or one region on each side | The CDN handles static content; dynamic content stays close to the majority |

A CDN does not turn a distant server into a nearby one. It caches static files close to the user, but game connections, dynamic requests and database queries still have to reach the origin. The guide on [CDNs and game servers](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/infrastructure/what-is-a-cdn-game-server) explains the limit.

## Price: real vs. dollar[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/vps-brazil-vs-usa#preco-e-moeda)

A VPS in the United States is usually priced in dollars. The invoice amount in reais changes every month with the exchange rate, paying by international card incurs IOF, and there is also the card issuer's spread. An annual budget built on today's exchange rate can blow up without anything changing in the contract. For a company, there is also the difficulty of booking foreign-currency expenses in the accounting.

A VPS in Brazil has a fixed price in reais and accepts Pix, boleto and card, as the guide on [VPS payment methods](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/vps-payment-methods-pix-boleto-card) shows. At StreetHosting, entry is R$ 26.00 per month on the Xeon line, with 2 vCPU and 2 GB, and R$ 40.00 on the Ryzen 9 9950X line, with 1 vCPU and 2 GB DDR5. A typical production environment, with 4 vCPU and 8 GB DDR5, costs R$ 118.00. The full picture is in [how much a VPS costs in Brazil](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/how-much-does-a-vps-cost-in-brazil).

The honest comparison is not converting the sticker price at today's exchange rate. It is estimating twelve months of cost with room for the exchange rate, adding IOF and, above all, weighing the effect of latency on your audience. Even when the monthly fee abroad looks lower, every Brazilian user ends up waiting close to 100 ms more on each round trip.

## LGPD and where your data lives[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/vps-brazil-vs-usa#lgpd)

LGPD applies to any processing of data about people who are in Brazil, no matter which country the server is in. Hosting in the United States, therefore, does not remove the obligation to comply with the law. On the contrary, it adds a layer: storing that data there counts as an international transfer, allowed only in the cases the law itself provides for, such as standard contractual clauses approved by the ANPD, and it has to be documented.

There are also two practical points. Data stored on American soil is also subject to American laws. And contracts with larger companies and public tenders sometimes require the data to stay in Brazil, something it is better to find out before the migration than after.

This guide is not a substitute for legal advice. If your project handles sensitive personal data, such as health, financial or identity documents, talk to legal counsel before choosing the region.

## What StreetHosting offers in each region[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/vps-brazil-vs-usa#o-que-oferecemos)

* **VPS in Brazil:** all [StreetHosting VPS plans](https://streethosting.com.br/en/vps) are in São Paulo, with KVM, root access, NVMe, a 1 Gbps uplink, Anti-DDoS included and activation within 60 seconds. The [Ryzen 9 9950X](https://streethosting.com.br/en/vps/ryzen) line goes from R$ 40.00 to R$ 846.00, with DDR5 and boost up to 5.7 GHz. The Xeon line goes from R$ 26.00 to R$ 553.00 and reports an average latency of 20 ms in Brazil.
* **VPS in the United States:** does not exist. StreetHosting does not sell VPS outside Brazil.
* **Dedicated servers in the United States:** in Los Angeles, New York and Miami, with standard Anti-DDoS. Stock varies by city and at times there is no free unit; price and availability appear live on the [US dedicated servers](https://streethosting.com.br/en/dedicated-eua) page.

In practice, most projects with a Brazilian audience solve everything with a VPS in São Paulo. If you also serve North America or the Caribbean, you can combine the VPS in Brazil with a dedicated server in Miami or New York, each serving the audience on its side. If all you need is a small VPS in the United States, let's be clear: that product does not exist here, and a whole dedicated server tends to be more machine than a small project needs.

## Frequently asked questions

VPS in Brazil or the United States: which is better?

It depends on where your users are. For a Brazilian audience, a VPS in Brazil wins by a wide margin on latency: a few dozen milliseconds versus more than 100 ms to the United States from the Southeast. The US makes sense when your audience is in North or Central America, or when your application talks constantly to services hosted there.

What ping does a US server have for someone in Brazil?

As a rough range, over 100 ms round trip to Miami or New York from the Southeast, and around 150 ms or more to the West Coast, such as Los Angeles. The figure varies with the ISP, the route and the time of day. A server in São Paulo sits at a few dozen milliseconds for most of the country.

Is a VPS in the United States cheaper?

The sticker price sometimes looks lower, but it comes in dollars, changes every month with the exchange rate and still pays IOF on an international card. A VPS in Brazil has a fixed price in reais, with Pix and boleto. For a Brazilian audience, the latency difference is usually worth more than the monthly price difference.

Can I store Brazilian customers' data on a US server?

LGPD does not forbid it, but it still applies when the server is outside the country and treats the transfer as an international data transfer, allowed only under specific cases in the law, such as contractual clauses approved by the ANPD. Keeping the data in Brazil makes compliance simpler. For sensitive data, talk to legal counsel before deciding.

Does StreetHosting have a VPS in the United States?

No. StreetHosting VPS plans are in São Paulo. For a presence in the United States, the option is the dedicated server in Los Angeles, New York or Miami, with standard Anti-DDoS, a price shown live on the page and stock that varies by city.
