# VPS renewal pricing: why the second month costs more

You sign up for a VPS at an inviting price, and on the next cycle the invoice shows up at double or triple. This guide shows how to spot that pattern before you sign anything.

Quick answer

A VPS renewal price is what you will pay on every cycle after the first, and it is not always the same as the price advertised at signup. It is common in the market for the entry price to be promotional and for the renewal to cost two or three times more. **Before you sign up, confirm the recurring price on the last checkout screen and ask support in writing**. At StreetHosting, the renewal price is the same as the signup price.

## How first-cycle pricing works[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/vps-renewal-price#como-funciona-o-padrao)

The mechanics are always similar. The provider sets a list price for the plan and, separately, a promotional price that applies only to the first period you buy. The ad, the price comparison and the search result show the promotional price, because that is the one that wins the click. The list price appears in smaller type, in a footnote, or only on the final cart screen.

The result is that two VPS plans advertised at similar prices can have very different yearly costs. Here is how that plays out in a generic market example, using round numbers for illustration.

| Pricing model | First month | Following months | Total over 12 months |
| -------------------------------- | ----------- | ---------------- | -------------------- |
| Promotional first cycle | R$ 20.00 | R$ 60.00 | R$ 680.00 |
| Single price, no entry promotion | R$ 39.00 | R$ 39.00 | R$ 468.00 |

The plan that looked like it cost half ends the year more than 45% more expensive. And the comparison made at signup time, looking only at the first row, pointed in exactly the wrong direction. The values above are illustrative of the market pattern and are only meant to show the arithmetic.

There are variations of the same mechanism. One is the discount tied to a long term: the low monthly price only exists if you buy two or three years at once, and the renewal after that goes back to the full price. Another is the first-purchase coupon, which stacks on top of the list price and quietly disappears on the next invoice. A third is a one-time setup fee that does not appear on the page's price card and only shows up in the cart.

None of these practices is necessarily dishonest when it is written visibly. The problem appears when the information exists only in fine print and the customer makes the comparison on the big price card. Anyone who reads carefully can spot all of them before closing the order, and that is exactly what the next sections teach.

## Why it hurts more than it seems[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/vps-renewal-price#por-que-doi)

If it were only money, it would be a manageable annoyance. The problem is that the surprise arrives when you are already locked into the environment. By the time of the second invoice, the server already has an operating system installed, an application in production, a database with history, an issued certificate, DNS pointing to it and users who are used to it.

* **High switching cost.** Migrating means planning a maintenance window, moving data, reconfiguring services and waiting for DNS propagation. Plenty of people agree to pay more just to avoid downtime.
* **A decision made under pressure.** The invoice is due in a few days and the immediate alternative is service suspension.
* **A budget that is already committed.**Anyone who planned the project's cost around the promotional price sees the infrastructure line blow up without warning.
* **Lost trust.** After that, every message from the vendor gets read with suspicion, including the legitimate ones.

The point is not that promotions are illegitimate. The problem is advertising a temporary price as if it were the price of the service, knowing the customer makes the comparison at that moment and that leaving later is expensive.

## How to read a provider's page before you buy[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/vps-renewal-price#ler-a-pagina)

You can find the real price without talking to anyone. These are the places where the information usually lives, in the order worth checking.

* **The final cart screen.**Take the order to the last step without finishing it. The summary usually separates "total today" from "recurring price" or "renews at". If the two differ, it is all explained right there.
* **The asterisk next to the price.**A footnote in small type usually carries the promotion's validity conditions and the renewal price.
* **The billing cycle selector.** Switch between monthly, quarterly and annual. When the promotion only exists on one specific cycle, the difference becomes obvious.
* **A requirement to buy a long term.** If the low price only appears with a twelve or twenty-four month commitment, the advertised price was never really monthly.
* **The terms of service.** Look for renewal, price changes and how long the promotion lasts. It takes two minutes and saves months of regret.
* **The setup fee.** Some plans hide a one-time setup charge that only appears at checkout.

Save a screenshot of the order summary before you finish. If the next invoice comes in different from what was written there, you have something to complain with.

## Six questions to ask before you sign up[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/vps-renewal-price#checklist)

If the page does not make it clear, ask support in writing, by chat or by ticket, and keep the answer. A vendor with transparent pricing answers all six without hesitating.

* What exactly will I pay on the second invoice, for the same plan and the same cycle?
* Is the advertised price a first-cycle promotion or the plan's normal price?
* Is there an installation fee, a setup fee or any one-time charge outside the monthly price?
* Are the dedicated IPv4, the panel and support included, or are they charged as extras?
* Is there a traffic allowance with overage charges, or is the uplink unmetered?
* If I upgrade in the middle of the cycle, how is the prorated amount calculated?

The sixth question seems out of place, but it is not. Providers that rely on promotional entry pricing often treat an upgrade as a new purchase, and then the promotion vanishes along the way. The answer to that question reveals a lot about the provider's pricing policy.

## How StreetHosting handles renewals[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/vps-renewal-price#como-fazemos)

Here the signup price and the renewal price are the same number. A 4 GB VPS on the Ryzen 9 9950X line costs R$ 66.00 in the first month and still costs R$ 66.00 in the twelfth, on the same cycle. There is no entry discount that expires, and no hidden list price waiting for the second invoice.

| Configuration | Line | Monthly price at signup | Monthly price at renewal |
| ------------- | --------------- | ----------------------- | ------------------------ |
| 2 GB of RAM | Xeon E5-2680 v4 | R$ 26.00 | R$ 26.00 |
| 2 GB of RAM | Ryzen 9 9950X | R$ 40.00 | R$ 40.00 |
| 4 GB of RAM | Ryzen 9 9950X | R$ 66.00 | R$ 66.00 |
| 6 GB of RAM | Ryzen 9 9950X | R$ 92.00 | R$ 92.00 |
| 12 GB of RAM | Ryzen 9 9950X | R$ 170.00 | R$ 170.00 |

The reason is commercial, not charitable. A customer who finds an invoice three times larger cancels, complains and refers nobody. Keeping the price stable costs less than winning back someone who got surprised. A customer who spends three years paying the same amount is worth more than one who joins cheap and leaves angry in the second month.

That has a direct consequence for how you compare. When the price is single, the number you see on the page is the number that goes into your yearly cost spreadsheet, with no asterisk and no mental math. If you are evaluating two offers and one of them needs an explanation to be understood, the difference between the two is probably not in the hardware.

The full prices for each size are on the [VPS page](https://streethosting.com.br/en/vps), on the [Ryzen line](https://streethosting.com.br/en/vps/ryzen) and on the [Xeon line](https://streethosting.com.br/en/vps/xeon).

## If you already got caught[](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/vps-renewal-price#ja-caiu-nessa)

Receiving an inflated invoice does not force you to decide on the spot. Do the math before you react.

* **Calculate the yearly cost on both sides.** Multiply the new monthly price by twelve and compare it with the yearly total of an alternative. The difference is your migration budget.
* **Add the cost of your time.** Migrating a small VPS takes a few hours. If the yearly savings are smaller than that, it may not be worth rushing.
* **Ask for a renegotiation before you leave.** Several providers extend the promotional terms when the customer asks. It costs one message.
* **If you are going to migrate, plan it calmly.** Pay for one more cycle to buy time instead of migrating with the clock against you and the risk of losing data.
* **Choose the next one with clear criteria.** Before repeating the process, go through the checklist in [how to choose a VPS in Brazil](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/how-to-choose-a-vps-in-brazil) and confirm the right size in [how much VPS you need](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/how-much-vps-do-i-need).

It is also worth checking what you are actually buying. A server with KVM virtualization delivers reserved resources and predictable behavior, something not every cheap plan offers. The explanation is in [what a KVM VPS is and what its advantages are](https://streethosting.com.br/en/guides/vps/what-is-a-kvm-vps).

## Frequently asked questions

Why is the VPS renewal price higher than the signup price?

Because many providers advertise a promotional price that is only valid for the first cycle, in order to win price comparisons. From the second invoice on, the full list price applies, which can be two or three times higher.

How do I find the renewal price before I sign up?

Take the plan to the last checkout screen without finishing the order. The order summary usually separates today's total from the recurring price. Also switch the billing cycle in the selector and read the fine print next to the advertised price.

Does StreetHosting raise the price at renewal?

No. The renewal price is the same as the signup price, for the same plan and the same cycle. There is no first-cycle promotional price that goes up later.

Can the provider change the VPS price later?

A list price change can happen with any service over time, and that is different from a first-cycle promotional price. The problem is not the occasional price change, it is the temporary discount advertised as if it were the regular price.

Is it worth switching VPS providers because of the renewal price?

Yes, when the cumulative difference over twelve months comfortably exceeds the work of migrating. Calculate the yearly cost at both providers and compare it with the time needed to move the application, data and DNS before you decide.
